Annulus is Ryu Yoshizawa’s third release on Orange Milk as Koeosaeme. His 2019 LP Obanikeshi was a barrage of high resolution abstract compositions, and Annulus picks up from there, refining the style and adding an extra layer of inspiration from the Southeast Asian folk music of Burma, Thailand, China, etc. He inserts music concrete with silky repetition, making you feel as if you are walking through parts of Asia, contemplating experimental music. Annulus is peaceful, melodic, atonal, and flows together as one big piece. Part 1 of the record is concrete music, and Part 2 is described as abstract music. It is distinctly Japanese despite other western influences like Steve Reich and Jon Hassle; music meant for a documentary that will be made in the distant future. Annulus features collaborations with Hidekazu Sakamoto, Seth Graham, and LXV.

Koeosaeme is Ryu Yoshizawa. From 2004, he has been a member of the sound artists group “OFFICE INTENZIO” under Yellow Magic Orchestra’s Yukihiro Takahashi. In addition, he is in charge of live event backup support and recordings for Ryuichi Sakamoto, Yukihiro Takahashi, Kyoka and many others. He also produces music commercially for Lotte and Square Enix.

Boardroom sound theme animates the hallways, kick-starting the processes of complex problem solving and multilayered global communication. The hyper-operation continues in the power-dancing zone, a standard procedure of declutterification of the corpo-mind with energetic-pop emotional engineering. The drones power up, and you’re off to the city. Swarming through the neon-lit tubes particles enter their mindful practice cubicles to generate some peace and quiet. Meanwhile, the gravity-elevator takes the authorised ISKRA DELTA care-squad to the top of the 112 floor highrise, a sanctuary for state-of-the-art technological artefacts that keep the brisk tempo of life going. In the simulation the sun rises again and nebula is refracted in the surface of the bio-digital city.

Aspiring to connect with a world beyond our consciousness and our planet, nimiia vibié sounds the interactions between a neural network, audio recordings of early Martian language, and microscopic footage of extremophilic space bacteria. Here, the computer is a medium, channeling messages from entities that usually cannot speak. However, it is also an alien of our creation.

Drawing on nimiia cétiï, Jenna Sutela's project on machine learning and interspecies communication, the record manifests a more-than-human language. This language is based on the computer's interpretation of a Martian tongue from the late 1800s, originally channeled by the French medium Hélène Smith and now voiced by Sutela, as well as the movement of Bacillus subtilis, an extreme loving bacterium that, according to recent spaceflight experimentation, can survive on Mars. The bacterium is also present in nattō, or fermented soybeans, a probiotic food considered as a secret to long life. Beyond Bacterial-Martian culture, or Martian gut bacteria, the project attempts to express the nonhuman condition of computers that work as our interlocutors and infrastructure. 

Jenna Sutela works with words, sounds, and other living materials. Her audiovisual pieces, sculptures, and performances seek to identify and react to precarious social and material moments, often in relation to technology. Sutela's work has been presented at museums and art contexts internationally, including Guggenheim Bilbao, Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo, and Serpentine Galleries. She is a Visiting Artist at The MIT Center for Art, Science & Technology (CAST) in 2019-20. 

The project originates in n-dimensions, Google Arts & Culture's artist-in-residence program at Somerset House Studios. Machine learning in collaboration with Memo Akten and Damien Henry. Miako Klein in the contrabass recorder and Shin-Joo Morgantini in the flute, with sound production by Ville Haimala. The album is mastered by Rashad Becker at d+m, Berlin.

Jenna Sutela - nimiia vibié I (PAN 104)

Toiret Status is Isamu Yorichika from Yamaguchi, Japan. His new work Otohime is his first vinyl record and his second album on Orange Milk following ◎omaru◎ in 2016. Otohime includes collaborations with Co La, and Yoshitaka Hikawa. He has also released music on the labels Noumenal Loom, Plus 100 Records, Pedicure Records, Wasabi Tapes, and Slagwerk.

Isamu began making music as a drummer for noise and hardcore bands which led to his first solo recordings in 2015. As Toiret Status he has said that he wants to create work resembling the idea of food going through digestion, excretion, and then flushing. This cycle is like the regurgitation of sounds sampled from his daily life: movies, video games, and field recordings. The sources are digested and then flushed back out as a different color.

I watched a Toiret Status performance in Fukuoka Japan in a shrine on top of a sumo ring. The show promoters were serving Japanese BBQ (Yakiniku / Yakitori) with a distinct common Japanese BBQ sauce and Heinz yellow mustard, and it was possibly some of the best food I have ever had. While I was eating I watched Isamu aggressively move around the sumo rink using a nintendo controller as a midi device, triggering intense bursts of sound. The first two steps in his goal - consumption and digestion - were happening to me when I first met him. The dedication Japanese people often display in art was also apparent while watching his performance; it felt like a congealing of "Japanese-ness" with the sumo rink, shrine, food, joyful and absurd music all meshing together in a quick burst.


Isamu’s new Toiret Status record Otohime is named after a fairy tale queen (with magical powers?) who lives undersea and entertains travelers by giving out gifts like jewelry. In Japanese this title could be an apt pun for - sound queen. However, Isamu stated that the title is a wishful statement about how his music would be utilized in the future. When people flush a toilet, he hopes his music might play and become a funny reminder of the Japanese emphasis on politeness and social tact. He likes the idea of turning something awkward into something fun. Toiret Status uses romaji (English letters written in Japanese phonetics to describe a foreign or new idea that is not in the Japanese tradition) for his album title, to hint at a pun and imply the desired function of the music while simultaneously alluding to Japanese folklore - a queen who makes music.
