- Hey David, what's up?

Hey guys, nice talking to you again. I'm currently preparing our upcoming releases on "smile for a while" for 2016. Some youngsters + some well known remixers, our usual concept. While I am writing this we're preparing the release party for our 6th record @ Loftus Hall / Berlin. We could get our big idol Move D as the remixer, so we're very proud of that one...

- How did you record the podcast/which mood/story behind it?

Well this podcast shows the deeper side of my DJing, incorporating some minimal stuff, some very deep House, some hypnotic Disco grooves and a little bit of black magic. I just mixed something I thought you guys would like as well as I do ;)

- What's your musical background?

I bought my first Techno compilation early in 1992 in Berlin. Around 1996 I switched to House Music, mostly clubby, little bit commercial stuff like George Morel, Strictly Rhythm, "Silk" Hurley, etc. I started DJing around the year 2000, playing lots of House but fastly boradening my "DJ horizon" to other genres. Well that's it mainly. I've been collecting, browsing, catalogueing records with verve throughout the years, so Music is really my #1 passion.

- You are the co-founder of Smile For A While, a vinyl label based in Frankfurt - tell us about this one! How did it come to life and what were the most important milestones?

Actually I moved to Berlin last summer, so we're kind of a twin cities label now, I'd say. Anyway, Daniel Tischer (D.Soul) and me have been doing parties with local & international bookings in Frankfurt since early 2011. Many of the local guys we found were producing tracks in their basements and studios. We really loved a lot of their tunes, so we decided to release some of them on Vinyl. Freebase Records in Frankfurt helped us a lot to make that happen. Earlier in 2012 we had failed to release stuff of better known guys like Borrowed Identity, because... yeah well I really don't know why. Maybe we just asked ther wrong people how to get the ball rolling. So after 2 various artists EPs we took a small break and came back with our maybe most popular release, so far: Monosoul - June EP, which included a Borrowed Identity remix. Ever since we're trying to do more and to promote unknown artists that deserve a broader audience.

- Is the vinyl medium important to you? Why?

It really is. It's something you can relate to in many ways. You can't really relate to an mp3 file, you cannot identify with a file. Also when I'm DJing I tend to play records only, even though I have USB sticks as backup. You really come into a magical flow if you can touch & feel your tools (i.e. your records). Not always, but if it's a good party then everything happens by itself, and just with Vinyl, that's for sure...

- Latest hot tracks or second hand markets - how do you choose your music?

I'm always trying to reduce my 16.000 records wantlist on Discogs, haha! No seriously, I have a large collection to choose from, so in each set I can cover & express different moods, different eras of electronic music, merging into something new, yet something short-lived, for this mix only. The next one can be totally different, again. I hardly shop at record stores anymore. My beard's too short for that ;)

- Who are the DJs or producers that inspire you?

People I admire for what they did behind the decks are guys like Ryan Elliott, Laurent Garnier (in the old days), Ricardo Villalobos, Even tuell (of workshop), Move D, Thomas Hammann, Gerd Janson, etc. - even Dixon, yes! All eclectic, but kinda down-to-earth guys crossing genres in their sets, between 115 and 128 bpm. Mainly the same that I'm trying to do... Producer-wise... really hard to say as there are so many I admire. Kerri Chandler of course, Daft Punk, Cassius, Mr. Fingers... Of more recent producers I love the stuff of the guys around EMG / John Swing / Lucretio, as well as Italo Johnson. Lovely music, totally underground!

- You have been around in the music scene for many years, what have been the most important developments in your opinion (for better or for worse)?

Well, ever since 2009/10 it all seems to be about waves of revival. Revival of House Music, revival of analogue Techno, etc. I like those trends because they give you the opportunity as a DJ to dig out your old dusty diamonds that you never thought to hear again... The trend of unwillingness to pay for music and the trend of "you only buy records if you DJ" around the early / mid 2000s was really bad. That did a lot of damage to the scene. But it also cleared up certain things. So to all trends there's always a good and a bad side, I'd say. 

- You have moved from Frankfurt to Berlin not long ago how is that turning out for you? What is the main difference between the music scene in those two cities?

It's cool in Berlin. Only thing I don't like is that everyone wants you to play for free. I won't jump on that bandwagon. Frankfurt is really dead to be honest. There aren't more than 3 or 4 clubs left where you can do your stuff your way, and if you do it anyway, no one will care or show up. Berlin is different, you have loads of music lovers here that are really digging the scene as it used to be. That's lovely! Anyway, I love my friends in the small scene of Frankfurt, don't wanna miss them!!

- Any other projects you would like to tell us about?

Nothing recent really. I'm just a DJ, that's what I think I'm not too bad at. Maybe I'll start doing or even releasing some own tunes, some time soon. But it's not like a "must have" for me. I just wanna play records to open-minded crowds, that's what I love. If releasing records gives me more opportunities to DJ, I might do that. I won't compromise there though. After 15 years of DJing you have high standards, even more for your own stuff...

- What drives you/is important to you beyond music?

I like getting mad about the situation our world is in. Or in other words: politics, history, those are things I'm a lot interested in. So maybe all the clubbing and DJing is just escapism, who knows?

CMYKast #023 - Mr. Fonk (Smile For A While)

Widely considered one of the hallmarks of dub-infused electronic music, as well as an endless resource of inspiration and awe for generations of electronic music artists and enthusiasts, Vibrant Forms II by @Fluxion is now being reissued by Subwax Bcn. Originally released on Mark Ernestus and Moritz von Oswald's revered Chain Reaction label in 2000, the many calls for a reissue of this cavernous masterpiece has finally been answered by the Barcelona imprint.

Fluxion's Vibrant Forms II was his second album on Chain Reaction and it successfully managed to broaden the space and the environment of the compositions, as well as develop further his technique of textural sonic blend.

Bio:
Since 1998 Konstantinos Soublis aka Fluxion has been releasing music on a variety of labels, Chain Reaction, Echocord, Type, and others). Fluxion's output has been referred to as a cornerstone in the Techno/Dub/Ambient genders. His approach of liquid live-organic productions, incorporating techno, dub, ambient, sound design, has formed a signature sound that is point of reference for many producers. His textural environment shifts and harmonic blends, alongside strong rhythmical bursts, create an intelligent motion-picture landscape. Hidden melodic elements alongside sound manipulation form a narrative that everything happens in a smooth transition, like melting one element onto the other to form one big picture. Under the Fluxion moniker K. Soublis has released 7 albums and many ep’s.

As highlighted by us in September last year, then Romanians have unwittingly formed a new blend of dance music, blending minimal techno & groove laden deep house, sewn up and exported to some of the clubbing world's hottest cities. Djs Rhadoo, Raresh and many more have helped to define a new sound amongst an overly-familiar genre - including hot export Priku. This Romanian musician and DJ shares a special 2 hour live mix with MEOKO, recorded at Bucharest's Snrs48 party, in turn delivering a live and unedited snapshot of his driving, deep and at times, subtle sound. A dynamic mix - playing with the space between notes and veering into minimal, atmospheric tapestries - Priku's focus on nuances in sound, percussive elements and thick slabs of bass running throughout shall take the MEOKO listener on a far flung, left of centre journey into a lesser known aesthetic.
