AI-32 signals the arrival of ‘The Fifth World Recordings’, by Son of Chi (Hanyo van Oosterom) and long-term collaborator Arthur Flink. A tribute to the late Jon Hassell, who passed away in 2021, the album connects a deep running thread that goes back to the source of Chi project. Carrying on from where Hassell left off, the album takes inspiration and references from his Fourth World music concept and the ancient Hopi tradition of Native America. Illuminating the subliminal space of the arising Fifth World, Son of Chi pays respects to an inimitable force in contemporary music. 

Hassell’s ‘Dream Theory in Malaya’ forms a touchstone to Hanyo van Oosterom’s musical journey, which soundtracked long, deep and reflective periods living in the cave of the Kallikatsou (Patmos, Greece) back in the early 80s. This period resulted in Hanyo’s track as Chi - ‘Hopi’ - in 1984. Hanyo met Hassell shortly after in 1987 at his “The Surgeon in the Nightsky” concert in Rotterdam - it wasn’t until twenty years later that Hanyo invited him for two magic nights of “Instant Composing Sessions” with the Numoonlab Orchestra (with a host of other artists) at the LantarenVenster, the very same stage where Hassell had performed in 1987 and also where Chi did their first live performance. 

Dreamful, mysterious, prophetic, the Fifth World Recordings features the quiet yet elaborate sound of Chi awash with rich instrumentation, field recordings, and old stories by the firelight. Sketches were created with drones, loops, and soundscapes, with which Arthur Flink (also a member of the Numoonlab Orchestra) jammed on trumpet. Channelling Hassell’s idiosyncratic style, floating melodies and lyrical improvisations are parsed into the mix, where Hanyo has processed and manipulated the recordings, also referencing Hassell’s exotic scales and unique harmonics.

Additionally, the wah Bamboo flute at the closing piece is an homage to the works of Chi co-founder Jacobus Derwort (1952-2019). For this piece Hanyo used his first bamboo flute he made at the cave of the Kallikatsou in 1984. Arthur Flink answers in counterpoint with the wah trumpet, almost like the intuitive communication of the nightbirds...

More and more I’ve realising that as humans and artists we create space and also invite each other into these spaces. With space I’m referring to all dimensions; e.g. physical, emotional, psychological, mental. 
Some natural and highly relevant questions comes with this understanding: With what intention am I taking part in creating the world? How are my invitation affecting the world we live in? Can I contribute to the changes needed to allow balance and sustainability in the world? 

I strongly feel that all beings are fundamentally the flow of creativity and for all humans it’s essential to find one’s own way/channel to express this creativity. By doing this we naturally allow the balance needed to express in a sustainable way.
As an artist I know that I have potential to invite others to remember this. 

I’m so inspired and happy to see the Earth Percentage project taking form, making it possible for me as an artist to contribute to one of the most important challenges we as humanity are facing.

Paragon means a person is regarded as a perfect example of a particular quality. Always open to exploring different sounds, as of lately, Paragon has been discovering more relaxing or different realms of electronic music or IDM. Nowadays you can find in his selections mostly from ambient, broken beats of techno to different types of drum n bass. He has been the curator of the podcast series Parallel Perception, where you can also experience his vision and taste in electronic music.

"This set is part of my Sunday morning routine. Me and a cup of coffee and records that I put in for the quiet mornings. I picked some of my favorite records that I keep coming back on a regular basis. It's not super polished but it's honest something that helps me to wake up and have a good day. for this anniversary I was able to win a good friend, a person who has an excellent feeling for beautiful sounds and deep beats. And please take it easy that I write less to him and I left a few more personal words about the Seasidetrip - as my beloved grandpa was telling me: »you know, little roland(son) to sailing is dead but the sailor has it done. cause a sailor has to what a sailor has to do. cause it has to do with passion and if you have passion you are the richest person of the world. It’s a hard job, but the moments on the deck when the wind blows in your face, when you hear the waves and you see the vastness of the sea, these moments will give you more than all the money in the world.« and so I devote a great part of my being and doing, my beloved grandparents. 

It started with a mix about emotions & music by the sea and that's the point till today. at the beginning captain https://soundcloud.com/rolandson did not think it would be 100mixes. this all (the mix-series, the netlabel - releases and showcases) is a result of a momentary feeling in 2012. music and to be at the ocean, It helped me through a hard time and I decided spontaneously to make it audible. in first case for me at second for friends. and yeah, some good friends liked the idea, became part of it, created their version and helped to understand some things.
And so, the Seasidetrip - Mixseries emerged and grew up and grew and brought me together with many lovely human beings. I am VERY THANKFUL for every journey, every listener and follower, for every comment and interaction … and I am grateful for everything that has come out of it - on negative or in a positive way - everything is part of that trip.

Yes, I think; for many of you, the Seasidetrip is about music and to bring wonderful sounds to your ears and into your hearts. and it’s good that it is what it is. but please, think by that: it’s not about: how many plays & likes each mix generates - it’s about: which story each mix tells - it’s all about the passion and not about a hype or a hip music direction. Da lässt du mal die Nummer 100 vom Stapel und schon überschlagen sich die Ereignisse. Käpt’n https://soundcloud.com/rolandson ist ein Gin-gestandener Seebär, doch die tagelange Sause auf dem Oberdeck hat selbst ihn dann in die Koje verwiesen und nur zum Luft schnuppern kurz raus gelassen. Während da also die hundertste Ausgabe unserer kleinen feinen Reihe die 7 Weltmeere kreuzt, flattern Huldigungen, Einladungen, Danksagungen und allerlei bunt zirpendes Musikgedöhns durch die Luke. Gut das wir uns schon letztes Jahr den liebenswerten https://soundcloud.com/garstique an Bord holten, denn er weiß, wie man eine torkelnde Crew vorm Absaufen bewahrt. So lässt er uns alle mit seiner langsamen Version von langsam, schnurstracks über die Planken schlaumeln - verschiebt das Raum Zeit Kontinuum und dreht mal eben alles von vorn nach hinten und mittendrin nochmal um 180 Grad. Alles klar? Ja, Nee - bei uns auch nicht. So versuchen wir uns seit Tagen mit seinem Mix auszukatern und freuen uns wie nach einer geglückten Kaperfahrt auf den April und den blauen Kater im Acidbogen.
