Ottawa is the capital city of Canada. It lies in the eastern part of the province of Ontario on the Ottawa River, directly on the border with the province of Quebec. Ottawa means "trader" in the Algonquian language, a people who traded along the river at the time of settlement. On the opposite bank of the river lies its twin city, Gatineau. Ottawa itself has a population of 1,068,821 (2021 census), making it the sixth-largest city in Canada. The Ottawa-Gatineau metropolitan area, with a population of 1,488,307 (2021 census), is the fourth-largest metropolitan area in Canada.

The population is 63% English-speaking and 15% French-speaking. Ottawa is the only officially bilingual city in the region. English predominates in the city itself, unlike Gatineau, located across the Ottawa River, where French is the dominant language. Due to a large immigrant population, numerous other languages ​​are also commonly spoken.
