The Beloved ﷺ told us that a time will come when confusion will reign supreme and believers will be bewildered. It seems we can't go a week without Muslims online jumping into another moshpit that adds to the chaos and further obscures matters rather than bringing any clarity or benefit to the actions of the limbs or the heart.

This is a recording of a talk I gave on Saturday, October 26, 2019, in Sydney, Australia at Mīzān Avenue about the Fourth Pillar upon which the religion of Islam rests as per the Hadith of Jibreel peace be upon him - the Signs of the Hour.

This was not a storytelling talk. Knowledge and action in Islam are intimately linked, and knowledge of the Signs of the Hour implies an imperative to act, which means there’s a whole aspect of fiqh most of us haven’t been exposed to. I hope to be a means of elucidating this area so that it serves as an antidote in these confusing times where a person wakes up a believer and becomes a disbeliever in the evening, or ends his day as a believer and wakes up a disbeliever.

May Allah protect us all from such tribulations.

Salahuddin Mazhary tells us about the history of Islam in the Caucasus, with a focus on Chechnya and Dagestan. He talks about the Sufi tariqas in the region and the role dhikr played in resisting the Russians. He also tells us about notable figures such as Imam Shamil and Kunta-haji and their legacies.

The ‘authoritarian wave’ has touched most continents and regions. So even before the crisis unleashed by Coronavirus many peoples across the world were resisting rising authoritarianism, nationalism and racism. Coronavirus has often been talked of as a historical rupture, igniting system change. ‘We will not go back’ to the pre-crisis world is the clarion call of the current moment. Yet, the nature of the new world being born is still far from certain. And while opportunities for progressive political change undoubtedly exist, this new historical conjuncture provides considerable opportunities for the further embedding of authoritarianism and new attacks on democracy. Warning of these dangers a new report, Covid-19 and the new authoritarianism, co-authored by Dr Guy Aitchison and Dr Luke Cooper, surveys the rise of anti-democratic forces and assesses their reaction to these extraordinary recent developments. Moving between the global picture and British domestic politics, the report argues that a new state-dependent capitalism is coalescing in response to the crisis and it ‘fits’ all too organically with the agenda of the authoritarian populists. The New Authoritarianism: COVID-19 and the challenges facing democracy [Audio]

E490 | In 1919, Paraskevi Kyrias went to Paris to advocate for Albanian independence. As a woman in the overwhelmingly masculine space of international diplomacy, she faced sexism and unwanted romantic overtures. Nevertheless, she called on her connections within a global Protestant community, her life in diaspora in the United States, and her experiences at the elite Constantinople Girls' School to play a unique role in the Albanian campaign for independence after World War I. In this episode, we speak with Dr. Nevila Pahumi about Kyrias' story, her leadership of the early Albanian women's movement, and the diary of her experiences in Paris she left behind. We also trace the history of this remarkable woman after 1919, as she and her family were repudiated by a secularizing Albanian state determined to excise Protestant activism from their national history--until she was once again remade as a feminist icon in the last years of her life.

Nevila Pahumi works on the history of women's education and their emergence in the public sphere in the late Ottoman and post-Ottoman Balkans. She graduated from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor with a PhD in History in 2016, and between 2016-2018 she held the Alexander Nash Fellowship in Albanian Studies at UCL's School of Slavonic and Southeast European Studies. She has published two-dissertation related articles in the Journal of Modern Greek Studies and CLIO and taught a range of topics on Eastern Europe including women, gender, and sexuality after socialism. Her research and writing have been generously supported by an IIE Fulbright Fellowship, the Charlotte Newcombe Dissertation Fellowship, as well as a combination of research and writing grants from the University of Michigan's Weiser Center for Russian, Eurasian, and East Eurasian Studies, the Institute for Research on Women and Gender, and the Rackham Graduate School.

Susanna Ferguson is Assistant Professor of Middle East Studies at Smith College. She writes and teaches on the history of gender, sexuality, and political thought in the modern Arab world.
