Menqui is a Berlin-based music enthusiast, always on the hunt for musical treasures ranging from obscure electronics over weird disco tunes, wavey bangers, proto house and way more. Aside from his immaculate credentials as a DJ, he is part of the monthly radio show „Past Forward“ on Cashmere Radio, manages the R.i.O. label and produces music as one third of the „Dolphins“ project. Menqui’s mixtapes invite you to float away and dream to, but if you’ve ever heard him out you already know he knows how to work a dancefloor.

I have long been an admirer of Brian Cavender's music. Under the name Seafoam he has been producing some of the most excellent laid back and dream state, deep house music.

Since as far back as 1999 he found a home on labels such as Guidance, Straylight, and Lo-rise Recordings. A 13 year haitus led to Seafoam productions having a higher stock price than facebook on Discogs, making original copies something you handle with care and try not to scratch. 

Rue De Plaisance stepped up in 2017 with a collected works compilation which marked the return of Seafoam. Since then we have been gifted with regular nuggets of house on a regular basis. If you head over to Brians bandcamp you will find even more music to discover. 

I was delighted when Brian agreed to curate a mix. His request was to create a downtempo offering of all his own productions. 

YES YES YES. We speak the same language. 

Let your mind float, to the sound of Seafoam.

"I did the mix especially for Toi Toi and wanted it to embody many styles of legendary aspects of our electronic club-culture whilst still rocking the boat a little.

Magical timing too, two hours after I finished this mix, I thought to myself: "perhaps to play Tony halfway in this mix is a nice idea"....but then an hour later Isis texts me the legend came to pass, so this coincidence makes even more sense."

My dearest San Proper! 

My close friendship and musical connection with San Proper goes back many many years. 
San is someone that is an avid reader of books in the most varied of subjects, especially music history, therefore words, poetry and writing in general are very powerful tools in this artist's personality. With that said, I can't go without writing about him from a personal perspective, as it is also in line with the design of this mix series. 

Too many amazing memories to list but here are some:  

Maybe around 2010 when he was scheduled to play live at fabric and the airline lost his luggage. It was late and I was trying to help source the gear that was missing, he messages and goes: rather than live on uncertainty I am going to work the live with what I have. It was a very limited set up, I remember walking in to Room 1 at the start of his live set then reading on the stage desk: 'FUCK YOU LUFTHANSA!'
THIS is Dr. Proper. Even with a such a limited set up he absolutely rocked this room in the best way possible. 

Other remarkable memories is that San always joined afterparties in my loft in London and he always carries a field recorder on him. Outside my house in Dalston with me and the adorable Masomenos couple, Adrian and Joan, and on the way to Kristina Records San was filed recording the sounds of the cars in Kingsland Road, hence the now widely known 'Auto Sea' track out in 2013, also part of his Animal album. 

San Proper branches the realms of artistry beyond borders, it includes being a musician, producer, dj, record and books collector, a performer, an entertainer,  an enigmatic character with a heart of gold even though the animal persona attempts to hide that, hehe.
