Mark E: A Deep Grooves Master for Disco Soul

Mark E is a DJ and producer from Wolverhampton, who crafts steady, soulful house music with a unique edge. Unlike flashy club DJs, his tunes are slow-burning and timeless.

Mark's love affair with electronic dance music began early, as an adolescent, when rave culture swept through England. Being schooled in the art of the Groove by legends like Frankie Knuckles, Mark E developed his production skills, eventually launching MERC, his own label that birthed his blue-collar grooves: house music that felt rough and real, like classic tunes in a factory with a touch of disco warmth.

In 2005, Mark released “Scared”, a ten-minute rework of "Baby, I'm Scared of You" by Womack & Womack, coughing the attention of the influential selector and BBC DJ, Giles Peterson, and leading to a string of awesome vinyl records that made him a house music hero. In 2011, Mark launched his debut album “Stone Breaker” on the prestigious label Ghostly/Spectral.

More so than any other account, TINPE’s daily archival feed seems to have captivated lovers of underground dance music & club culture everywhere. Certainly, it has captivated me & keeps delivering the kind of musical joy that is hard to come by on these socials.

So I’m extra honored to post a guest mix by TINPE creator Ben Manzone. The mix came about through shared musical history: turns out we both used to be DEEP into obscure underground disco. 

15 years ago, Ben (as Benguin), Love On The Run and Fox 50 ran Foreal People, a deep cut disco party that took place in various New York locations. Those included Lucky Cat in BK (long gone) and Meatpacking District’s legendary APT (also long gone, and incidentally first venue I played at in NYC). 

Ben’s new guest mix revisits selections from Foreal People days. And trust me, old records are still fresh! Some of the jams have become better-known via streaming and reissues, while others still remain a little mysterious. No track-listing for now, but Shazam is your friend (except when it isn’t 😎)

 Born and raised in Rio de Janeiro, Godi Osegueda started as a DJ in the 90’s when his interest in musical instruments was extended to mixing and producing. In the early 00’s he began his first regular residence at Club 00, along his partner and record digger Clark Nelson (Chicago).
Right after that he joined LickSamba Crew, a musical- artistic branch between Rio de Janeiro – Austin that reaches its peak along the Ritual party editions. By the 2005 Godi evolved as a DJ/producer, graduating as a studio technician and electronic music producer in the schools Microfusa and Sae Institute, both in Barcelona, which in the future have reflected on his accurate mixing techniques.Still in his past movements, along with the carioca scene Godi joined the Disconnection Crew with regular presentations in ClubHouse Rio with memorable editions besides Joi Cardwell, Cordell Johnson (Excursions, Chicago) and Jojo Flores (GotSoul, Montreal). Each step of his career was essential so he could absorb the sensibility that is essential to communicate with different parties and generations, offering what is new and trendy in his sets as well as in Bones Records collection.

As a DJ, a part of the Unabombers and as promoter of the legendary Electric Chair nights, Homoelectric, Electric Elephant Festival and Homobloc, Luke Una was not only contributing massively to Manchester’s 80s and 90s club scene but still carries a deep passion to share his music in clubs around the world. He is the curator of seminal compilations such as the Electric Chair and Electric Soul series as well as his latest É Soul Cultura project and label.

This Session was recorded for "Kasheme Conversations", an interview series from, with and for music lovers. This month with Luke Una.
In our conversation, Una shares what caused his relentless pursuit of music, why he would not call himself a record collector and why he is, as he calls it, so evangelical about music.

It is not everyday we are sent a 5 hour mix from someone we have asked to join our Phonica mix series; but when Sheffield & Manchester legend Luke Una sends one… you have to jump straight into it! Having become first recognised in the late 80’s and 90’s as one half of production team “The Unabombers” with Justin Crawford, Luke over the years has shown to be a master in all genres be it Balearic, to Brazilian to E soul, House, Disco and Techno, you name it! With his Worldwide FM show over the years gaining a cult following Luke has gained an even more of a broader crowd from his curation of his E Soul Cultura compilation series via the label Mr.Bongo (Both comps topping our EOY lists in 2022 and 2023). This exact vast taste (that is displayed in these compilations) is very much pummelled into this five hour journey of a mix like a piece of clay and sculpted into a fine piece of art.
