Mark E: A Deep Grooves Master for Disco Soul

Mark E is a DJ and producer from Wolverhampton, who crafts steady, soulful house music with a unique edge. Unlike flashy club DJs, his tunes are slow-burning and timeless.

Mark's love affair with electronic dance music began early, as an adolescent, when rave culture swept through England. Being schooled in the art of the Groove by legends like Frankie Knuckles, Mark E developed his production skills, eventually launching MERC, his own label that birthed his blue-collar grooves: house music that felt rough and real, like classic tunes in a factory with a touch of disco warmth.

In 2005, Mark released “Scared”, a ten-minute rework of "Baby, I'm Scared of You" by Womack & Womack, coughing the attention of the influential selector and BBC DJ, Giles Peterson, and leading to a string of awesome vinyl records that made him a house music hero. In 2011, Mark launched his debut album “Stone Breaker” on the prestigious label Ghostly/Spectral.

Guus Christian and Sander Emil are Shared Joy. When you can find them in a DJ booth, it’s all about togetherness & connection. With a shared passion for electronic music, a deep understanding of each other's record collections, and a great friendship as a starting point, it makes sense that Shared Joy radiates when playing together. 

 Guus & Sander are based in Nijmegen, where they run Blauwdruk. Blauwdruk is an event (and label as of lately!) that celebrates the roots and branches of soulful dance floor culture. Both are familiar faces at Open Source Radio, Nijmegen’s independent online radio platform. Sander had a role during its inception and Guus has built a great catalogue of radio shows, both through his own selections as his curations for guest DJs to come and play.'

Sander says: about the recording; it is a live recording from a club night last summer in Mesh. It showcases the more deep & electronic sounds of our spectrum. It will be our first recording online, and we wanted it to be a live recording from one of the nights we played. Might make it less perfect, but makes it real & we cherish good memories from this night :)

Not many have covered the ground like London's Richard Sen has. Starting his deep dive into the underground scene by being the much recognised Sen graffiti writer he has moved on over the years to be considered one of the UK's great selectors and DJ's. Having also released music under several guises, not only under his own name (which he also has wealth of huge remixes for artists like Bryan Ferry, John Grant, Unloved and LCD Soundsystem), but most notably under the phenomenal Padded Cell and the excellent Bronx Dogs. With his excellent weekly radio show on Charlie Bones' Do!! You!!! Radio station as well as dropping the award winning Dream The Dream (UK Techno, Breakbeat And House 1990-1994) compilation on Ransom Note, Sen finds himself with an even larger wealth of fans. With that being said we are delighted to welcome Richard Sen to the Off The Record mix series where he provides us with a 3+ hour journey taking us on a deep dive into his record selection providing styles of all kinda throughout. It is not everyday we are sent a 5 hour mix from someone we have asked to join our Phonica mix series; but when Sheffield & Manchester legend Luke Una sends one… you have to jump straight into it! Having become first recognised in the late 80’s and 90’s as one half of production team “The Unabombers” with Justin Crawford, Luke over the years has shown to be a master in all genres be it Balearic, to Brazilian to E soul, House, Disco and Techno, you name it! With his Worldwide FM show over the years gaining a cult following Luke has gained an even more of a broader crowd from his curation of his E Soul Cultura compilation series via the label Mr.Bongo (Both comps topping our EOY lists in 2022 and 2023). This exact vast taste (that is displayed in these compilations) is very much pummelled into this five hour journey of a mix like a piece of clay and sculpted into a fine piece of art.
