"What I like to make, I often like to play. Over the last year or two, I've [made] a lot more techno, and the techno that I like to make is atonal, kind of deep…tone-derived melody in a sense, but dissonant sort of stuff…instead of industrial noise. You can hear it in the mix...it's pretty fucking deep. That sort of sound is definitely something that I'd love to make, and the production world is where I currently find myself more than in the DJ world."

"I tend to just…let come out what wants to come out. Lately, it's just been techno. I'll do some house here and there, some more uplifting stuff, [but] techno [has] taken over. It's hard not to [let it], living in Minneapolis. There’s such a vibrant and distinct energy here. It’s the tonality. You hear it with Lonefront and Autokinetic, where it's so deep, but it's a primal, raw energy that speaks to my inner caveman. It just makes me want to dance and watch the shadows on the cave wall."

As one of the mainstays in the Amsterdam scene, Mark has been putting out some incredibly classy records on his own imprint, drawing inspiration from deep house, electro, techno and the incredible talent pool of his peers such as Eversines, RDS and Human Space Machine. 

As well as his productions, he is an incredibly deep digger with the skills to match, flawlessly weaving together gems from across the musical spectrum of the last 20 years. As you know, this is exactly what we like here at On Ro so we're more than happy to present this fantastic mix from a true DJ's DJ.

"Working my ass off, to be honest," is how Eli Escobar starts our interview  below. That basically sums up his vibe. The New Yorker might not have the same household name status of other DJs who have been soundtracking Manhattan clubs since the early '90s, but he certainly deserves it. Any New York resident worth their salt should have him near the top of the list of their favorite local DJs. He plays anywhere and everywhere in the city, and he can play pretty much anything he wants to, as his RA Podcast will attest.

When it comes to his own music, Escobar puts out records equally informed by disco, hip-hop and house—in other words, a very New York sound. He hasn't been producing as long as he's been DJing, but his albums and EPs for labels like Classic, Night People and Razor N Tape are full of the soul, humor and talent of someone who knows dance music inside out.

As Escobar says below, he doesn't really have any one type of sound. His DJing varies greatly from night to night, and he's always adding to his considerable collection, so no one set is quite the same as another. For his RA Podcast, put together painstakingly with many specially edited tracks and recorded in a hotel room in Colombia, he strikes a relatively reflective tone, but it's still eminently danceable. He moves gradually through two hours of house and disco that ranges from celebratory to muted, from minimalist to rich with live instrumentation. It's the sound of New York dance music as passed through generations, from one of its best and most beloved musical storytellers.

For #65 on our Tapes series is the champion of maximalist left-field dance, Sangre Voss.

He’s been pushing sounds out of South-East London since his debut Dance Class EP, released via Third Place in 2019 and now runs the eclectic pseudo pseudo as a platform for the more under-loved and peripheral genres. Having also featured on Rhythm Section and Fabric Records, in 2020 Sangre released Expressions of a Mind in Slumber 2017-19, a collection of ambient compositions woven together with samples of his sleep talking which received support from the likes of Avalon Emerson and Bradley Zero.

...yeah so reality streams into ayour mind via your five senses, but it’s not reality in its totality, it’s just those parts of reality that evolution has deemed necessary for you to recognise for the survival of your DNA, like you can’t see gamma rays, but they’re out there and they’re reality too. Anyway you recognise this vanishingly small fraction of what actually exists, but then this sliver of reality itself is warped by your perception, that’s the process of attributing meaning to what it is you’re recognising. See really you see you’re just a hyper-aware monkey scared to the verge of insanity by the fact that you can recognise that you’re alive and you see your Self as separate from your body. The reaction to this is to create patterns, to give meaning, because without meaning we’d all just be nihilists and we’d never get anywhere. So this process of giving meaning to everything that’s going on ‘out there’ beyond the dome of you skull we call that culture, it’s basically perceptual conditioning. Culture is what happens when a group of hyper-aware monkeys live together ascribing essentially random meanings to the tiny portion of reality they can sense so that they can get on with each other, find existential peace, sleep at night, have kids, not jump off cliffs that sort of thing. But this process of conditioning it’s so normal to us because it’s hard wired into our very being that we don’t even realise its going on. It’s like we’re living mutually affirmed bubbles we’ve blown for ourselves, like giant cooing super-babies. We call these bubbles civilisations, the values and meanings that underpin everything we do and why we do it, but we don’t think about them and just take all this stuff at face value. We call it common sense, there’s no such thing as common sense. It was common sense to worship Jupiter once, or keep slaves or not let women vote. Common sense is just the stuff you don’t think about because you just take it for granted without ever wondering why...
Ultradyne consists of two anthropoids, one from Detroit the other from the Netherlands, we won’t reveal their names because that’s not the point. Ultradyne have been making dark, deep, intense and in-your-face electro tracks since the mid-90s, with their first relase, ‘E.Coli’ appearing on the legendary Warp Records. Their label, ‘Pi-Gao Movement’ appeared in 1999 with the release of their first album, Antarctica. 2013 saw the reinvigoration of the Ultradyne project with fresh releases and bookings. This recording is taken from a session in Berlin’s Suicide Circus, (Alone? Bored? Desperate? Suicide!). Ultradyne: A point. A circle. A wheel. A wagon. A car. An airplane. Spacecraft. Time travel. The transformation of an idea. Conceptual evolution realised in this case via audio-visual manifestations.
