A few months after his ‘Friendly Surveillance’ EP, the tenebrous frenchman Jon Beige strikes back : three of his latest productions have been chewed up and spat out under adventurous auto-remixed versions for chemically sedated dancers. There were initially meant to be club-oriented versions, but the end result sound more like they would potentially clear the dancefloor… But that’s how we love them, so we decided to name them ‘Empty Club Mixes’, which sadly sound pretty familiar at the moment.

Melting high-tech soundscapes, hypnotic synths and broken drums, Jon Beige’s synthetic universe got once again a beautiful graphic treatment by the disturbed pen of Serbian graphic artist Stevie Whisper.

Releasing Jon Beige since his earliest work, Global Warming Records is run by french producer and talent seeker Malcolm, who imagines and shapes each project hand in hand with his artists. Club Friendly Surveillance will be the label’s 14th release.

Oscar winning director Dusan Vukotic made first science-fiction film in Yugoslavia in 1981. While receiving a modest critical reception at the date of release, „Visitors from the Galaxy“ gained a huge response from the audience which culminated in recent years with a proper and growing cult following. The groundbreaking electronic soundtrack by composer Tomislav Simovic was also first in its own genre: never before the complete score was done entirely using electronic equipment in a combination of melodic and experimental style. Croatian label Fox & His Friends Records released restored edition of original score five years ago. It was their debut on the label scene and marked their journey on a discovery of long forgotten first electronic soundtrack in Yugoslavia.
Thanks to the involved artists Fox & His Friends Records continue to break the rules and receive, as composer Tomislav Simovic and director Dusan Vukotic already did, a tribute to the hard work of finding, restoring and releasing the hidden gems from the history of ex-Yugoslavian music. Alen & Nenad Sinkauz (Croatia), Ali Renault (United Kingdom), Anatolian Weapons (Greece), Credit 00 (Germany), Drvg Cvltvre (Netherlands), Goran Vejvoda (France / USA), Heinrich Dressel (Italy), Repeated Viewing (United Kingdom), Security DJ (France), Tapan (Serbia) and Timothy Fife (USA) spared no time and their talent to pay a homage to Tomislav Simovic in a truly unique way of new analogue, abstract, electronic and synthesized dance floor friendly music. Similar compilations are rare: Steve Reich, Ennio Morricone and Peter Thomas Orchestra are some of the most famous ones who received similar treatment, making this mammoth project worth attention and careful listening. Tomislav Simovic, who sadly died in 2014, is also the first composer from ex-Yugoslavia region to be recognised among contemporary international electronic musicians as someone to be inspired with.

Jūra Elena Šedytė is composer, vocalist and improviser. Focusing on interaction of voice and electronics, human psychology, social behavior, transdisciplinary creative projects and improvisation moves her to constantly expand the field of her approach and methods in composing and performing music.

The freshest realization of X/TENSIONS for voice and electronics has been performed by Jūra Elena Šedytė and her creative partner Ieva Rižė. In this EP the intangible, invisible and always very unique human instrument - the voice - flourish in the world of objects and symbols, created by two artists. The subtle verbal and instrumental expression metamorphosis, rhythm and vibrations layered with visual materials are born and creates the parallel of the real world. The extension of the body through the voice creates tension in the processes of sound embodiment.

A 12” filled to the brim with talent, Schrödinger’s Box have collected three juggernauts of wave tainted electronics for the latest. Dmitry Distant teams up with Norwell for a partnership of serious intent. The pair deliver a trio of blackened tracks, opening with the ghoulish caverns of “Transient State” before the long shadows, acid stains and painful echoes of “Visionary.” The duo venture into brighter territory with the computer funk of “On A Verge of Veil”, crisp beats and bubbling melodies changing the tone. Following Beyond the War, Cute Heels returns to occupy the flip. The Colombian is immediately on it with the swirling mirrors of “Kuriyaki Horizons,” a kick drum offering solid footing in this entrancing piece. An aloof, yet alluring, disco hook takes hold for “Litua”, a low thump keeping time. The finale arrives with the clipped industrial gait of “Determinated In Order.” Marching to a military beat, this work is industrial inspired with Cute Heels keeping a close ear to the pressure release gauge.

Optimo Music presents “Vanessa 77” the debut album from New Zealander Vanessa Worm. Originally due in May, it was rescheduled due to the lockdown, but we couldn’t wait any longer to get it out into the world, so here it is, on vinyl and digital.

After entrusting us to release three much-loved singles, it seemed right to let Vanessa stretch out across an album and show the world what she is about and how talented she is. Vanessa is exactly the kind of artist Optimo Music dreams of finding; her music fits in with no genre and no scene – it is its own genre and its own scene. Musically free and anarchic, Vanessa conforms to nobody’s dogma. Before lockdown Vanessa played a series of Southern Hemisphere live shows that entranced all who saw them. Hopefully next year she can come and do the same in the Northern Hemisphere.

We asked her for a few thoughts about her album. Vanessa says – “Vanessa 77, like most creative endeavours is a journey of self discovery. Mentally, emotionally and creatively. I spent most of my time alone in winter 2019 – focused solely on personal development and self realisation via the creation of this album. It was a way for me to put my mental state onto a plate – the joys, the fears, the epiphanies, and so on. I so desperately wanted to share what I was learning with the world too – I intended for Vanessa 77 to help others to heal, self-realise and alchemise. It was a 9-month process of death and a re-birth from the old into the new. Much like the world is experiencing now entering 2020, I hope this album can provide some form of healing, soothing, celebration and act as a sub-conscious guide for us as we enter into this New Earth. Thank you to all who listens, enjoy!”

Group Rhoda, the solo project of Mara Barenbaum, returns to Dark Entries with ‘Passing Shades’. An integral member of the Oakland electronic music scene, Barenbaum has been writing, performing, and plunging into oneiric depths as Group Rhoda since 2009. This is the project’s fourth LP, and the third time Barenbaum has collaborated with Dark Entries; previously on the Max & Mara LP ‘Less Ness’ in 2013 and the Group Rhoda LP ‘Wilderless’ in 2017.
Passing Shades is an investigation of the metaphysics of loss and the transitory nature of the material world. But it is not a grim collection; over 8 songs, Group Rhoda diverges through synthesizer-laden symphonics, four-to-the-floor inflections, and cosmic musings. Barenbaum’s striking voice and singular songcraft guide us through this labyrinth. Arpeggiated waltz “Flow” channels wisdom sought through martial arts; “Earthly Ark” sets a Margaret Atwood poem from the God Gardener’s Hymn Book to somber electronics. The vocoded canticle “Nevermore” is dedicated to the memory of a beloved cat. ‘Passing Shades’ is both mystifying and revelatory. Folk forms are echoed only to detour into the alien. Each song functions as both a fragment of a larger puzzle and a koan unto itself.
