My friend Philip Nangle told me years ago about the technique of kutsinera where two mbira players interlock playing the same part but one beat apart, where the first beat of the second player's part sits in between the first and second notes of the first player's part. 

Which is essentially a delay. 

So here's a simple variation we played in class today, treated with a little random delay.

The Inner Child Explained - Walk The Wu Wei #018

Dusk In The Forest

April 20, 2019. The recording begins at 7.37 in the morning. I really like diversity of birds in Matsalu but recording is somewhat difficult because there are no natural obstacles (thick forest or mountains) to preventing noise from the roads. It's not technically pure clean recording. It's a sketch, the groundwork, note in my audio notebook.

Solidum, is an album of unexpected stillness and negative space from William Ryan Fritch, a composer most known for his lush, dense arrangements that teem with a raw kinetic sense of energy.

Typical Fritch records are chock-full of hyper-textural sound, where mechanical noise and small idiosyncrasies of each instrument become an integral part of the music’s character. By contrast, Solidum uses a colder and more rounded sound palette that relies on PZM and boundary mics to capture the upright piano, cello, violin, and harp bowed with rosined fishing line and blend them with digital piano and A Roland JX-3p. This gives the muted acoustics an unnatural smoothness and a pitchy quaver that makes the listener question what is synthesized and what is not. The creative impetus was to see what sense of emotionality and sincerity could be achieved without relying on Fritch’s familiar aesthetic of tactile and vulnerable sounds.

The title Solidum comes from the Latin phrase “in Solidum,” meaning “for the whole.” It’s a mentality that must somehow prevail, at a time when there is less of a sense of closeness than there has been at any point in recent memory.
 
Many works of art have been made amidst this pandemic and it’s been fascinating seeing how artists have translated the experiences of heightened uncertainty, loneliness and longing for connection. Solidum is Fritch’s one search for connection and deepened empathy in a world where touch and closeness has been so cruelly taken away from our means of showing love.

I don't know that there's merit to employing the beast - the internet - to disturb having grown accustomed to the beast.

It wasn't eight years ago that city people would come to the School here on the farm and look at me concernedly when they found out the hard way that I, as it is said, 'had no service'. Two weeks ago the Bell guy was up a pole on the lane at the behest of an erstwhile air b/b landlord, to install - I would say 'impose' - some kind of higher speed version of the beast, to make this rural area attractive to people who want to get away from it all. There's bound to be a pretty stout demand for well appointed places to get away from it all in the wake of all this distancing.
Maybe this virus is a disturbance in the Fentanyl supply. Maybe the internet is the slickest methadone yet, keeping hale and hearty the mania for empty engagement, for the vacant calories of content.
I won't claim that there's loads of requests for more from me, on this or any other subject. There isn't.
I've never been on the other personal devices, or platforms, or anything else. Don't know how to activate them.

This is as compromised a move as I seem capable of, social media wise. Not very sophisticated, but earnest.
Here's an ad hoc meeting of the farm crew, issuing proof of what they're mindful of while forking hay and picking out the poison ivy roots and milking the ewes.
I did my best on short notice. We'd like something here to be useful to your ruminations, before the horn blows and your rumination time is cut short.
