Stephen Jenkinson — Spiritual Activist, Teacher, Author & Ceremonialist With Master’s degrees from Harvard University (Theology) and the University of Toronto (Social Work), Stephen Jenkinson is revolutionizing grief and dying in North America. Stephen is redefining what it means to live, and die well. Apprenticed to a master storyteller, he has worked extensively with dying people and their families, is former programme director in a major Canadian hospital, former assistant professor in a prominent Canadian medical school, consultant to palliative care and hospice organizations and educator and advocate in the helping professions. He is the author of Die Wise: A Manifesto for Sanity and Soul, Homecoming: The Haiku Sessions – a live recorded teaching, How it All Could Be: A work book for dying people and those who love them, Angel and Executioner: Grief and the Love of Life – a live recorded teaching , and Money and The Soul’s Desires: A Meditation, and contributing author to Palliative Care – Core Skills and Clinical Competencies. Stephen Jenkinson is also the subject of the feature length documentary film Griefwalker (National Film Board of Canada), a lyrical, poetic portrait of his work with dying people.

Stephen Jenkinson is the founder of Orphan Wisdom School, a place for people yearning for a deeper, more connected life -- one that embraces all aspects of what it means to be human.  He is also a teacher, storyteller, and author.  In 2015, he penned the award winning book, "Die Wise," focused on the phobic way our culture approaches death and dying.  More recently, he published, "Come of Age," a impassioned call for raising a generations of Elders who can guide us in our stewardship of the planet and species.

In this interview with ICCE founder and director, Scott D. Miller, he addresses the North American response to the COVID-19 outbreak, paying particular attention to how the West's "death illiteracy" distorts it's planning and  mitigation efforts, thereby increasing suffering and perpetuating the very fears it seeks to relieve.

Culture activist, teacher, author ~ Stephen teaches internationally and is the creator and principal instructor of the Orphan Wisdom School, co-founded the school with Nathalie Roy in 2010, convening semi-annually in Deacon, Ontario, and in northern Europe. He has Master’s degrees from Harvard University (Theology) and the University of Toronto (Social Work). Apprenticed to a master storyteller when a young man, he has worked extensively with dying people and their families, is former programme director in a major Canadian hospital, former assistant professor in a prominent Canadian medical school. He is also a sculptor, traditional canoe builder whose house won a Governor General’s Award for architecture. Since co-founding Nights of Grief and Mystery with Gregory Hoskins in 2015, he has toured this musical/tent show revival/storytelling/ceremony of a show across North America, U.K. and Europe and Australia and New Zealand.
