After a long break the Oscillate Mix Series is back with a powerful contribution by Juba, British-Nigerian DJ, radio host and documentary maker. As part of the London-based party series and collective BOKO! BOKO! Juba has started DJing in 2015 and has been building a strong reputation as a terrific selector combining her interest in music from Africa and the African diaspora with contemporary club sounds and classics - in short: everything that makes you want to dance immediately. 

Recently Juba finished her work on The Assurance Podcast which is based on her 2020 documentary on the struggle and chances of female artists in Nigeria called Assurance. Especially the topics of female empowerment within the music industry, intersectionality and the junctions of music, society and political developments have been a focus of her multifaceted body of work. Juba easily combines her political interests, her love for music and dance with her academic background in history and languages. 

This mix is an energetic blend of “amapiano, afrobeats, baile funk, gqom, techno and funky house” mixed in a fast pace to make sure that your body does not stop moving from start to finish.

Oscillate Mix #38 - Juba

Oscillate Mix N°39 is provided by Tash Todd aka Bakläxa. The UK DJ, radio host, producer and one half of the alternative R&B/Pop duo Toni&Mash is a musical all-rounder.

The connecting themes of her radio show “FEELS” on Bristol’s Noods Radio, her productions and her eclectic DJ sets are bass and dance music. Bakläxa loves all things bass-heavy and danceable. She moves through genres like hard-drum, grime, hyperpop, footwork and bubblegum bass as if she has never done anything else in her life. 

You can truly hear that in the Oscillate mix where Bakläxa combines Drill via PC Music with fast pace drum’n’bass and it sounds like these tunes really belong together. Watch out for upcoming releases on Paloma Records, Ecke Records and follow her on bandcamp.

Oscillate Mix N°40 comes from DJ, promoter and label co-owner Cheng NWSH (pronounced: 'nwaaaaaaa-shheeeeeeee'). 

This vinyl-only mix is anything but straight forward: Cheng easily blends garage, drum and bass and electro into an exciting story of high energy feel-good vibes. Oscillate Mix #40 - Cheng NWSH

So happy to announce that Oscillate Mix # 41 is provided by Katia aka Katiusha. It is a brilliant showcase of Katia’s vast knowledge about the more leftfield crevices of electronic music. The London-born DJ and radio host has established a versatile profile in the Berlin scene since moving here in 2017. Her radio show “Above The Clouds” on Cashmere explores various physical and emotional connections to different cloud formations by soundtracking them with the help of friends and guest DJs. On the other hand Katiusha loves a good rave and can provide an equally fitting soundtrack to your 140bpm+ club experience. Katia has had appearances on NTS radio, Rinse and is a regular guest on various mix series throughout the web. This mix escorts you slowly from the depth and darkness of Koehler’s - Destroying Angels via Lurka’s bass-heavy - Clean to faster landscapes provided by Heritage and Sibilant. Please welcome AUCO for mix number 42 of the Oscillate Mix Series. I first met AUCO working as artistcare at a friend’s party this Summer and was immediately hooked by the dynamics and energy of their set. AUCO is a DJ, producer, radio host and label owner from London currently living in Berlin. Apart from djing Berlin's hottest parties, they are also one half of Infinite Quest alongside Neana which started as a radio show on Cashmere and has grown into a party series and also a label recently. This mix was recorded after a night out when AUCO was feeling particularly inspired by being able to move and feel their body within a club space after a long time of pandemic induced abstinence. Oscillate Mix #42 - AUCO

Artist: Bored Lord
Name: Daria Lourd
Pronouns: she/her/hers

The new year starts with a mix by one of my favourite artists and producers Daria Lourd aka Bored Lord. She has been on my radar for her relentless and beautifully crafted mixes and edits for about 3 years and I am happy that Daria is the first artist in 2022 to contribute to the mix series. Apart from being a glamorous figure and well renowned DJ in the night clubs of NYC, San Francisco, LA, her hometown Oakland and beyond, Daria started self-releasing her own productions and edits back in 2018. She uses her vast influences spanning several decades of music and genres to produce her own tracks and combines them with samples from TV series, movies, pop songs and rave anthems but also collaborated with producer, singer and performance artist IDHAZ for her EP They Never Taught Us To. Daria’s first production outside of her own bandcamp, The Last Illusion EP, came out in September 2021 on Eris Drew’s and Octo Octa’s T4T LUV NRG. It was the first release that was not produced by either one of the co-founders of the label. Her motivation for this expansive creative output comes from keeping the tradition and craft of DJing and edits alive, giving people something to dance to and allowing room for whatever process might come out of that but also utilizing her craft for her own expression and world building. Love this! 
Bored Lord is working on a full length album and several collaborational EPs with friends at the moment, so keep your eyes and ears open.

Oscillate Mix #43 - Bored Lord

Ayebatonye is an experienced DJ, radio host, artist and Founder/Creative Director of the DIY arts and community platform Irregular Fit. Her involvement in the electronic music scene in Sydney and beyond is multifaceted and deeply rooted in empowering QTBIPOC/Bla(c)k artists and audiences through her work as a DJ, social/political commentator, educator and steady figure of Australia’s nightlife. Her DJ sets are not tied to a specific genre but always have one thing in common: a great appreciation for afro beats, electrifying percussion and a vibrant energy that is reflective of Ayebatonye’s contagiously positive and captivating personality. Via her platform Irregular Fit she is helping members of communities of colour to gain access to music ecologies, equipment and knowledge via DJ workshops, community events  and skill sharing opportunities. Irregular Fit has been supported by The Red Rattler Theatre, Beats by Dre, City of Sydney, Inner West Council and Casula Powerhouse Arts Centre among others.   

Community building has always played an important role for Ayebatonye as a motivation for her work, a coping mechanism and a form of resistance to the dominant culture. Through her work she wants to bring joy to herself and the people surrounding her but also release some of the emotional, physical and mental pressure that comes with the fact that this world is not necessarily made for her as a queer Black woman of Nigerian heritage.

At the moment Ayebatonye is working on a lot of mixes, preparing for the upcoming festival season in Australia and some commissioned playlists for the Art Gallery of NSW as part of the Mardi Gras Queer Art After Hours as well as more DJ workshops for Irregular Fit.

Jay messaged me in January with a mix and a few details about himself and his involvement in the electronic music scene in the US. I was instantly blown away by the trackchoice and the energy of the mix he provided so I am very happy to have Pryz aka Lojai contribute to issue #45 of the Oscillate Mix series. Jay is based in NYC and apart from being a DJ for about 2 years, he is also producing music and hosting a monthly radio show named Sound Waves on London’s radio station, bar and label Aaja Music. His DJ homebase is a party collective from Boston called Infra who have been running parties in Massachusetts under various names since 2016. Jay joined them as a resident about 2 years ago. 
This mix clearly showcases the broad influences from which Jay draws his inspiration ranging from Jessy Lanza’s Electronica to the Drum’n’Bass extravaganza of Rhythm Assembler via bass-heavy techno influences a la Iris. The thread that holds everything together is a dedication to vocals, fast changing rhythms and a feeling for the right speed of a track at the right time. Pryz wanted to present a side of his musical sphere that he had not revealed to the public before and had been motivated by his ever present love for music - sharing a piece of heart. Next up: releasing some of his own music so keep your eyes peeled.

The hi-hats of Fracture & Sam Binga’s “Xtatic” are blasting from the set of desktop speakers in my soon-to-leave Berlin apartment while I am writing these lines. It is the 5th time I am listening to the new Oscillate Mix by James Bangura and it still gives me the chills how versatile and flawlessly mixed it is. The energy is captivating from the first beat of Dynoman’s “Past Realities” until the last rolling bassline of Rene Wise’s bonus track “Truffle” and I wished the mix would not end after 1 hour 2 minutes and 17 seconds!

Timothy aka James Bangura is a Washington, D.C. based DJ, producer and label owner. He started releasing music in 2014 with his first official release named “Transitions” coming out on London-based Pineal Sounds in 2018. Since then Timothy has been putting out a constant flow of high quality releases on labels like Vanity Press Records, Mister Saturday Night Records, Haus of Altr, Banoffee Pies and Art-E-Fax and started his own label Percussion Functions with an 8-track compilation in 2019. Alongside Nativesun and Amal, Bangura started the super group Black Rave Culture which is at the heart of a new generation of Black artists reclaiming the roots of techno and making long overdue changes to the narratives about its origins. They released their self-titled debut album on the NYC label Haus of Altr in May 2021. Timothy is constantly working on new music and there might be an album coming out soon!

Oscillate Tracks 003 is the first split EP featuring resident Johanna Knutsson and alumni Karen Gwyer. The two performed together early last year, Karen live with her shimmering textures before Johanna introduced her bleepy tales. Their musical affinity was easily recognisable and our aim was to bring their dynamic connection from one fleeting experience onto the enduring form of a record. 

On Johanna’s side, the Swedish producer plays with tempo and panning, constructing vast soundscapes on the backdrop of a dubbed-out alternating bass drum with refrains from her Nord synth rippling throughout. On the flip we find Karen exploring melancholic ambient IDM, layering sparkling notes over lush melodies interlaced with rapid percussions, forming utterly exquisite works of art.

Straight from Kampala, Uganda, Kampire sends a contribution to the Oscillate Mix Series. Easily sliding through the genres, she combines local influences with a global take on all things bass. Kampire is not only a core member of Uganda's Nyege Nyege crew and an ambassador for (East) African music and culture but she is fighting for the good cause by focussing her energy on the queer/femme community and helping to create safer clubbing spaces in her hometown Kampala and beyond (also check out the "Salooni" art project she participated in, link below).

When Kampire entered the dancefloor and started DJing at last years Oscillate anniversary, people were captivated by her seamless change of speed, energy and rhythm. The mix she provided here is a perfect example for this!
