O Sótão Records is thrilled to announce the label debut of Lisbon-based producer and DJ, sometimes jah, with the five-track EP, Le Grenier.

Aptly named after O Sótão (Portuguese for "attic" or "grenier" in French), the EP is a trip through textures of deep, jazzy, and groovy house music, twisting and turning at a high pace. The heat outside simmers down, the night falls and you can feel the excitement of another summer season…

While currently based in Madrid, João's musical journey began in his hometown of Lisbon. Inspired by the sounds of the 90s, listening to his parents jam out with friends, these are deeply rooted in his records. "I'm endlessly inspired by artists who infuse soul into house music," João explains. "It's an intangible quality, but when you hear it, it resonates. Maybe it's a beautiful jazz chord, or a bassline perfectly locked into the groove. That's the feeling I chase when I create."

It all comes down to that: inspiration is unpredictable. "I might even record myself humming a bassline on my phone to capture the idea. Then, I build a track around this inspiration, laying down drums, and then basslines, samples, or chords, and build off that.” Hardware synths and drum machines collected over the years add unique textures, and in the end, it's about finding the balance between adding flavors and keeping things simple.

Le Grenier features four original tracks primarily created in Portugal over the past six months, complemented by a remix of Llorca’s “Indigo Blues” classic. "Coming back from two years in Sydney, I instantly gravitated towards a more jazz-house sound," João explains. "Reuniting with my white Telecaster in Lisbon allowed me to improvise with guitars and create a more organic sound, evident in the first three tracks." The final track, "between the lines," explores a different sonic territory, showcasing João's experimentation with electronic instruments and synthesizers.

While Le Grenier marks an incredible debut record for sometimes jah and a milestone for O Sótão Records, it’s just a glimpse into the artist’s boundless creativity. We believe you’ll hear more from him pretty soon.

[OSO005] Sometimes Jah - Le Grenier EP [O Sótão Records, 2024]

Gazpa debuts on O Sótão Records with a four-track experimental record titled Dub’n’Bass, which sees him delving into a crossover between Dub, Drum & Bass, Techno, and Ambient music.

This record is made of tracks that were buried in archives of unfinished projects, marking a sonic departure from the latest project No More House (2023).
The hypnotic "Roller" and “Tuba” dive deep into Dub & Electronica territory, layering a mesmerising ambient ethos that is present in the rest of the project.
Flipping the record, "Trackpad" injects a dose of peaceful Drum & Bass energy, a testament to Gazpa’s exquisite sound design.
Just a special note for the last track "Block," which was recorded and produced with Ricardo Martins "Liquid Bass" in Murtosa, at Miguel Almeida "Azak Okena"'s house. A collaborative effort that infuses a Drum & Bass progression with a dose of mystical feelings.

Inspired by a wide range of influences, Gazpa is once again able to create a stimulating sound aesthetic that captivates our imagination!

Mount Jam ( @mountjam ) is a promising producer hailing from Porto. He is preparing the release of an impressive debut project, that might blow up in the house music scene. We are very proud of having him in charge of our Guest MIX nr.6, a hour-long trip of dancefloor pureness that includes some of his unreleased work (watch out for those hits).

Over the past year the Lisbon-based Bernardo Mota ( @bernardomotapt ) has become one of our favorite up and coming producers. His music has been conquering the underground house scene, having released countless mesmerizing edits, and putting out some slick EP’s and Singles via theBasement Discos, Fresh Take Records, Karussell and more. He was also featured in Jamie Jones’ Boiler Room in London and that speaks for itself. Mota is now preparing to drop the awaited Simple Times EP on Simplexia Records and 2021 might be special for him, with more releases coming out later in the year.

Tomás Guimarães Vieira (also abbreviated to TGV - @tg_vieira) has been rotating in some of Porto’s best clubs and bars since he started DJ’ing more than ten years ago. Low-profile, focusing on a careful selection of sounds, TGV might not have the reputation of other DJ’s in the city (also because being a DJ is not a profession for him) but his sonic choices are up there where we need them to be. Luckily we’ve been hanging and learning from him, exchanging moods and excitements over music that connect us.

It’s with pleasure that we welcome TGV to our Guest MIX space for 1 hour and 30 minutes of pure deep house class. The track selection is outstanding, demonstrating his penchant for detailed and textured rhythms. From the CDJ’s decks to vinyl, from vinyl to CDJ’s.

Fred Aster ( @fredastermusic ) has been cementing his name in the underground deep house & electronic eclectic scene via his own, and acclaimed, production work, radio host duties and by leading one of the best African labels within the genre, Blur Records - an Angolan electronic music label established in 2018 that spinned-off from signature events showcasing an array of international artists. 

A few days ago we reached out to Fred offering our humble Guest MIX space for this month. His receptiveness was immediate and it’s really a pleasure to have him as the host of our 19th feature. Breathing and exhaling the best of jazzy, melodic and groovy house textures, he presents a hour of pure class. Miguel Tenreiro, going by the artistic name Gazpa, is a rising producer and DJ based in Porto, making waves with a string of quality releases over the past three years. He debuts on O Sótão Records with a four-track experimental record titled Dub’n’Bass, which sees him delving into a crossover between Dub, Drum & Bass, Techno, and Ambient music. Due to drop on June 14, 2024, Dub’n’Bass follows his debut solo work No More House (Jazzego, 2023) and I (Jazzego, 2021), the first GAZTWEEN EP, a collaboration project with Arctween (aka Tito Romão).

I started crossing paths with Miguel a year ago, becoming a fan of the Synth Jam nights he hosts together with Tito at the iconic Mr. Bean’s bar in Porto. Much like other characters who wander around, in and out of the bar, it’s always a revelation to come across someone with so much musicality - the kind that bursts out of oneself. This helpless and beautiful instinct that comes to the surface naturally. A way of expressing himself through a sound, a chord, an instrument. But I knew Miguel from before, long ago actually, when we were classmates in elementary school. So in a way, that person I met made all sense, although we lost touch for so long. It just took some time for me to realise it. He was always up to something. He is always up to something.

I approached him not long after that to check if he had any tracks he’d like to release on O Sótão Records. The label was kicking off (well… it still kinda is), and having a musician of such talent, still relatively unknown to the public, was the goal all along. I knew the time would come. And it did a few weeks back, with four beautifully arranged tracks that create space and momentum, reflection and energy, balancing in that limbo of light and darkness. Dub’n’Bass – it makes sense.

This record is made of tracks that were buried in Miguel’s archives of unfinished projects, marking a sonic departure from his latest project No More House (2023). The hypnotic "Roll" and “Tuba” dive deep into Dub & Electronica territory, layering a mesmerising ambient ethos that is present in the rest of the project. Flipping the record, "Trackpad" injects a dose of peaceful Drum & Bass energy, a testament to Gazpa’s exquisite sound design. Just a special note for the last track "Block," which was recorded and produced with Ricardo Martins "Liquid Bass" in Murtosa, at Miguel Almeida "Azak Okena"'s house. A collaborative effort that infuses a Drum & Bass progression with a dose of mystical feelings.

Inspired by a wide range of influences, Gazpa is once again able to create a stimulating sound aesthetic that captivates our imagination – something evident in his musical projects and in the residency he shares with Arctween at Mr. Bean’s bar. Transitioning from the successful 2 Years EP (O Sótão Records, 2023), Tiago Fonseca became an up and coming Producer and DJ based between Lisbon and Porto. On the back of gigs at some of the best clubs in the country, he also transitions from Tiago A.F. to TGZ (sounding Tigz) as his moniker for what’s to come ahead. Long Shape, his latest project, is O Sótão’s first vinyl release, and the first to be delivered with higher standards of professionalism. Learning the trade, the processes, the timeframes, the costs, and having just completed 10 years of existence. A good time to go a bit deeper.

In the summer, Tiago sent me a golden playlist of unfinished projects for a second opinion. The idea for a new record started there, and from the bunch we handpicked a selection that ended up making really a lot of sense for us. We were looking for wet deepness and eternal warm ups, pulling up the fader slowly. An invitation to leave our mental capsules and divert attention towards a seductive bassline cliff-hanging a dream. Progressiveness and jazz. Long shapes and melodies in the last frontier between nostalgia and hope.

To help, we invited Miguel Tenreiro (a.k.a. Gazpa) to master the tracks, with him adding a smooth-extra-delicious pump on the beautiful original elements. Miguel also picked up the title-track for a remix treatment, breaking up the tempo with a hip-hop-electronica finale, sprinkled by a guitar solo from Zé Nuno - another great musician stemming from Mr. Bean’s bar, where we held a residency for the past year.

Long Shape will drop on March 21st. Vinyls might be only available a bit later. It will be a landmark moment for us, being Tiago’s most complete work to date, and a better representation of his rich musical influences, expanding it, as we speak, to another level. It’s also been 10 years for O Sótão, so there’s that too. To sum up, I’m just very glad that Long Shape sounds exactly where we would like to be after all this time, with a quick image of a nite-lit skyscraper cutting into a couple of rocks being dropped in the coolest whiskey glass, and the people warming up to a dream.
