DARKWHITENESS

Three artists riding high off career-peak years combining for some darkly alluring techno? Yes please. Well, Clockwork and Avatism’s pairing isn’t strictly new, but they’ve been picking up a considerable head of steam under the CW/A moniker in recent months – including a booking at perhaps the last Fabric NYE of the pre-sniffer, pre-breathalyser era – and this release is their largest statement to date.  

We could have plumped for a typically unblinking edit from Lucy, but pulled Ilian Tape don Dario Zenker’s remix out the bag instead. He flattens the landscape of the title track, shelling claps down like pintacks to keep the pace choppy and brisk. It’s a good’un, and it sees release on Parachute Records next month.

The tenth instalment of Clergy sees host to the second collaborative project between lifelong friends Jorden Hodgetts and Sam Coates (Cleric and Setaoc Mass) split over two discs. The first disc presents three driving rhythmic orientated tools, 'Odyssey', 'Isolation' and 'Centre of the Cyclone', which are sculpted flawlessly for the dance-floor. You can see a continuous theme surrounding the release, the exploration of escapism is perfectly introduced by a foreboding message courtesy of John C. Lily: "Be in the present..."

The second disc progresses as a means to go on, with the sonic emphasis moving more towards tone and melody. The sweeping pads of 'Madame Butterfly' and the sinister strings of 'subconscious life' give the songs a feeling of satisfying unease, while the electro-twinged melody of '188' evokes emotion from start to finish. Last on the EP is 'Exploration X', an ambient voyage which beautifully rounds off the record. CRG010 will also end the second series of releases on Clergy, starting a new look and bringing in a new photographer for the next series.

The title of Rebekah’s next EP says a lot about the British artist’s take on techno. Her My Heart Bleeds Black EP drops soon on Bas Mooy’s MORD imprint, and covers the same kind of gritty, industrial constructs that have come to shape the established talent’s releases and DJ sets.

True to form, this latest set of tracks points to Rebekah’s Birmingham heritage, a city that’s also spawned the likes of one Anthony Childs and House of God. Ahead of her set in Room Two this coming Saturday, Rebekah sent over driving closing cut Opus Devotion for us to share as a premiere.

Giorgio Gigli - Lightness Perception (Original Mix) [Eclectic]

Drumcode has become a label synonymous with some of the most-cutting edge and forward-thinking techno over the last 20 years. Their artists include both emerging and established names, and one of those well recognised is Enrico Sangiuliano. Now announcing the very first concept album of his career.

The prolific Italian producer has been catapulted into the limelight after the runaway success of his past releases, and now Biomorph is born. 

A very special concept album designed to take the listener on a journey of evolution. A musical adaptation describing how biological and technological advances over numerous generations of time have all started from the same first step in our own biological journey.

Divided into 4 parts, Organisms opens with atmospheric tones, gradually blending complex textures and timbres to begin the evolutional process. The beginning of this section combines full sounding arrangements before stripping it all back to basics. From here it dissolves into the atmosphere. Organisms then progresses into a break-beat influenced, down tempo track using synths to add complexity to the straight, broken rhythms.

Galactic, futuristic elements are found in both tracks in Cosmic Forces. Upbeat, groovy, electronic synths resonate, before ‘Hidden T’ brings the tension to get things pumped up with stratospheric swirls and twirls to lay down one of the most mind meltingly deep drops.

Metamorphosis is mysterious, its opening beat is a deep and piercing tone that sends the listener into a sensory awareness of their surroundings before breaking into a fully charged, techno track, with Enrico’s trademark sounds and textures.

All evolution has an ending.

Two Probabilities shows the positive, starting out evocative and emotional, with a gentle harmony, gazing towards a ‘New Dawn’. On the other side of the spectrum lies the negative. This is influenced with a rhythm that articulates the beat of death, mathematical, cold and metallic in texture, it shows the unsustainability of its nature, with a hectic, anxious break beat influenced ending.

Hot on the heels of last year’s phenomenal ‘Creatures’ EP (also on RUKUS), the German producer (who’s previously released on ELEVATE, SCI+TEC and Minus) delivers another tightly woven techno stomper on Matador's label.  A true craftsman, he challenges himself at every turn, yet never compromises on quality, and this EP is a captivating, forward-thinking journey to the dance floor.

NYC-based talent Avision lands on Victor Calderone's Matter+ imprint with his 'Free Your Mind' EP, consisting of a cohesive stack of techno rollers including the deep and intoxicating title track.

As somewhat of a prodigy early on in his career, having claimed his first residency at Club Abyss in New Jersey by the age of 15, Avision has been a fixture behind the decks at acclaimed venues like Output, Flash Factory, Schimanski, Space, Heart, Stereo and Nest. Now as he flexes his chops in the studio he's revealing a strong output of dancefloor material that's continuing to make waves throughout clubland. 

Look for the 'Free Your Mind' EP to be released May 11.

‘Through The Cortex’, @Terence-Fixmer's sixth solo album and his first on Ostgut Ton, is techno with a voice – or rather multiple voices – guiding listeners through hypnotic, space- and social-themed terrain as a kind of dark soundtrack to darker days. Across eight tracks at a compact but varied 40 minutes, the LP touches on an aesthetic hinted at in recent Ostgut Ton releases, revealing a sonic narrative through noisy, screaming synth/vocal riffs with a jagged, guitar-like post-punk sensibility. The mesmerizing Suicide-like pop of single “Accelerate” sees Terence Fixmer using his voice as an instrument, chanting the track’s ambiguous title in an invocation of systemic change/collapse.
