Excerpt from a recording by composer Annea Lockwood of a location in Austria on the Danube, used in her piece A Sound Map of the Danube. The recording was used by Annea as part of her presentation during her appearance in The Nature of Music, a series of events co-produced by Other Minds and the David Brower Center focused on composers, performers and other musicians whose work incorporates aspects of our natural environment.

Mr. Smith in Rhodesia recounts Ian Smith’s brutal racial oppression in Rhodesia (now Zambia and Zimbabwe). The artist, Swedish text-sound poet Åke Hodell, employed an ancient format with a chorus of children (from an English language school in Stockholm) that repeats the choral leader’s phrases. The work caused controversy at the time, when the content of the work was discovered by the parents of the children in the chorus.

Other Minds, a private not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organization based in San Francisco, is dedicated to the encouragement and propagation of contemporary music in all its forms. Projects include the annual Other Minds Music Festival, Other Minds Records, Other Minds New Music Séance Concerts, “Music From Other Minds” on KALW 91.7-FM, and the History of New Music Preservation Project, making content from the Other Minds Archive available for free on the web at radiOM.org.
