Alerstorm is one of the figures who sets the tone for 0101 Records in 2019. Following his ‘Used to Say’ EP on the label, he’s set to drop another destructive cut which has just as much of a formidable reverse. ‘Was Great’ and ‘Nakamura’ explores Alerstorm and his technical ingenuity, beginning the New Year with an undeniable slab of hard-driving bass rhythms which demonstrates his penchant for sonic-driven chaos.
‘Was Great’ presents an A-side which is slick, unforgiving and peddles forward through rattling drum quakes and punching synthesis slicing through the mix, creating an elevated path into the record’s first drop. It’s one which takes you along for the journey as you’re left to freefall from an intimidating heighs, with the path punctuated by zipping beats and rolling breaks. ‘Nakamura’ is delivered in the same raucous fashion, whilst its grooves lie underneath a chaotic bassline. The throbbing pads of ‘Nakamura’ are a defining part of the track’s breakdown; as it becomes more and more overbearing with its rattling weight, the dancefloor appeal of ‘Nakamura’ is unmistakable through each shattering bass-quake.
Each track is a return to form for 0101 Records and Alerstorm, with the roster of 0101 Records steadily growing over the past twelve months. Although with the imprint being led by such an esteemed name, it was only apt that Maztek would draw from the producers who are pushing the boundaries of contemporary drum & bass, highlighting the mechanical prowess which has made its darkest pits so notorious.

The anomaly seemed at first innocuous enough. Following the first reporting of its existence, a team of scientists had been dispatched for its study. With their instruments they recorded a great deal of data, recovering soil samples, barometric readings, & even attempting to peer into its murky depths. The official report labeled it a sinkhole like any other, and the team departed without so much as a second thought. The area was cordoned off and signs were placed warning of the sinkhole, but no more was done to ward those nearby from it. Naturally with time, rumor spread and the curiosity of the citizenry was piqued as a few private citizens snuck past the barricades to inspect the sinkhole for themselves. Upon their arrival, their eyes met with a sight far different from what the official report had read.

A blackened corruption spread from the sinkhole, its inky tint smothering the verdant field that had lain in its place. Not a single plant grew, and the few trees had been twisted into forms which seemed to mock life itself. Within the minds of those present, a eerie sound reached out. Its beauty captivated them, the beguiling melody transforming the wasted landscape into an eden before their very eyes. Its verdant nature returned, blossoming before them and casting its petals upon zephyrs that brushed the skin of those watching with their warm embrace. At the center of this lush landscape lay a crystal pool, clear as glass and sky blue. Those watching fell to their knees, awestruck by the beauty of what lay before them. They found themselves wrapt in dance, spiraling throughout the meadow and circling towards the pool at its center. They spun faster and faster, orbiting closer to the pool with each moment, its cool waters calling to them. Crying out with pleasure, one closest leapt into the pool, soaring momentarily above its surface before breaking through. The illusion faded around him, the blackened wasteland searing back into his eyes. His cry turned to fear as he realized he was still falling, deep within the sinkhole in the wasteland’s center. As it echoed around the depths in which he fell, while the others above continued their dance obliviously, as they followed in his footsteps, moving ever closer to the pool as they danced to the CALL OF THE VOID. 

KOLT returns to EATBRAIN following his 2018 release of the OCTOPUS EP on the label with his latest four track EP entitled CALL OF THE VOID. INTO THE VOID opens the EP with its sharp edged synths, which slice their way to the fore following their introduction by ascendant arpeggios. PATCHWORK’s similar arpeggio’s take on a more ominous tone, providing a cinematic atmosphere soon overtaken by the rapid oscillations of a mobile metallic bassline. SPACE GHETTO is narrated by a conspiratorial vocal sample that lends a sinister atmosphere to its stomping halftime rhythm. TIMELESS features the addition of the textures of DUB ELEMENTS alongside KOLT, resulting in a furious sonic assault driven by frantic high pitched stabs and a roaring bassline. With CALL OF THE VOID, KOLT once more calls out to all who hear his music with his irresistible sound.

Joanna Syze: a name synonymous within the darker, moodier realms of drum and bass. No stranger to the music industry, with a DJ career and back catalogue spanning close to twenty years, Syze is renowned throughout the US & Europe for being one of the second wave of female artists –following on from the likes of DJ Rap, Kemistry & Storm etc., to break through not only as a DJ, but a highly competent producer, vocalist and businesswoman.

After a string of successful releases and collaborations throughout the noughties - including her unforgettable vocals on the seminal 'No Evil' by Kryptic Minds & Leon Switch, Syze shifted her focus to recording her debut LP for OHM Resistance - Rodina, which fittingly translates to “homeland” in Bulgarian and is Joanna's birthplace; a place entrenched into every fibre of her being and somewhere consistently referenced in many of her lyrics and work.

Fast forward to early 2016: after a five year hiatus to focus on her ongoing health issues, Joanna decided to begin working on her sophomore album –Surrender, another 17 track project but this time for Othercide Recordings. There are many familiar artist features on this album from both seasoned drum and bass veterans, right through to collaborations with the new breed of producers. The album includes the likes of Chris.SU, Akov, Barbarix, Volatile Cycle, Zardonic, Redpill & The Sect to name but a few – all laying down their own unique styles and identities. However, the feel & sound of Surrender remains unmistakably Syze throughout: moody, melancholy, instantly encapsulating with a heavy nod to the early/mid 2000's era of dark reese's and hypnotizing melodies that inspired her so much.
