The Machine was born out of rebellion and the strong belief that no matter how massive the machine is, we won’t back down. We wrote this from the perspective of the machine, not because we are it, but because we refuse to become it. To us, the machine represents everything we’re up against as artists and as people. It is the expectations, the pressure, the cold system that tells us how we should sound, look, or move in order to succeed. But we’re not here to play by those rules. Every note we play and every lyric we write is part of our march forward. Not towards control but toward liberation. Not to dominate but to remind people what it means to feel something real. When we say "the machine is coming", it's not just a warning. It's a challenge. We see it coming, we know what it is capable of, and we are still standing. Still creating. Still marching. This album is about defiance, about identity, about choosing your own path in a world that keeps trying to put you in a box. The conflict had raged through the night, staining the battlefield black with the dark blood of the fallen, a crust of congealing life permeating the bleak soil of this desolate place - the air punctuated the occasional shriek as soldiers fell - their voices joined with the weak moans of the dying that littered the landscape. Their enemies were gaining ground on that field of death, threatening to overwhelm the horde and put an end to their centuries-long advance. Dawn was approaching, and with it, it would carry the messenger of their fate. Joanna Syze: a name synonymous within the darker, moodier realms of drum and bass. No stranger to the music industry, with a DJ career and back catalogue spanning close to twenty years, Syze is renowned throughout the US & Europe for being one of the second wave of female artists –following on from the likes of DJ Rap, Kemistry & Storm etc., to break through not only as a DJ, but a highly competent producer, vocalist and businesswoman.

After a string of successful releases and collaborations throughout the noughties - including her unforgettable vocals on the seminal 'No Evil' by Kryptic Minds & Leon Switch, Syze shifted her focus to recording her debut LP for OHM Resistance - Rodina, which fittingly translates to “homeland” in Bulgarian and is Joanna's birthplace; a place entrenched into every fibre of her being and somewhere consistently referenced in many of her lyrics and work.

Fast forward to early 2016: after a five year hiatus to focus on her ongoing health issues, Joanna decided to begin working on her sophomore album –Surrender, another 17 track project but this time for Othercide Recordings. There are many familiar artist features on this album from both seasoned drum and bass veterans, right through to collaborations with the new breed of producers. The album includes the likes of Chris.SU, Akov, Barbarix, Volatile Cycle, Zardonic, Redpill & The Sect to name but a few – all laying down their own unique styles and identities. However, the feel & sound of Surrender remains unmistakably Syze throughout: moody, melancholy, instantly encapsulating with a heavy nod to the early/mid 2000's era of dark reese's and hypnotizing melodies that inspired her so much.

MIZO: Black Mirror
When looking at Mizo as an artist and what he’s achieved over the start of his career, it’ll come as no shock that he’s a Russian producer. It seems that Russia has become a microcosm of the drum & bass genre and everything it represents; even from the countries furthest reaches, it’s delivered astounding talent, the type of which has been comparable to figures who’ve spent decades in the game. Mizo’s own output has only followed this trend.

With music on the likes of Eatbrain, Blackout, Dutty Audio and Kosen, he’s never once allowed himself to drop his impeccable production grades. His upcoming EP on Cause4Concern still doesn’t break these rules. 
Although this time, Mizo has again entered the world of Cause4Concern, a label who recently celebrated twenty years in the game and an imprint who’ve proven over the entirety of their lifespan that they’re able to keep up with the current musical climate. Mizo’s forthcoming ‘Black Mirror’ EP is a tribute to this – from ‘Animate’ through to ‘Gravity Fall’, it’s easy to see how Mizo came under the fearsome stretch of C4C.

‘Animate’ begins ‘Black Mirror’ with crackling bass switches and grooves which give the track its momentum as it gradually breaks down. ‘Shaman’ pulls you against its twisting synthesis and tribal-like atmospherics, which create a deeper soundscape to become emerged in. ‘The Pursuit’ features Trilo and as part of the collaboration both artists add their take on a merging of the subgenre’s murkier realms and a more dancefloor influenced edge. ‘Black Mirror’ is the EP’s title-track and it focuses heavily on its slamming drums, centralising the cut with each weighty drum pad. Then ‘Gravity Fall’ is the finishing number, rolling through with sweeping peaks and deep troughs of bass. It provides an exploration of Mizo’s capabilities, showcasing his ingenious strokes of production. Already boasting support from artists such as Noisia, Black Sun Empire, State of Mind, Rene LaVice and Ed Rush, Mizo is a force to be reckoned with. Returning to Cause4Concern, their vast audience is once again about to become enthralled in the music of Mizo.

Completing the release is “Descent”, a decidedly darker number co-produced by Pittsburgh producer Dropset. Having reworked VC’s crudely named weapon “Meatspin” last year, the Pennsylvania native is no stranger to bringing out the best in the duo, a fact which is evident upon first hearing their latest offering. Opening with an ambitious amalgamation of vocal cuts, throbbing leads and hurtling drums, “Descent” strikes with precision, fuzzed basslines and voweled, synthetic groans weaving in and out of the mix. It’s a characteristically hard-hitting heater from the C4C camp, and a timely reminder that while we may have tragically lost the label’s co-founder Optiv this year, the imprint continues to do him proud, spotlighting an emerging cohort of D&B talent as we approach 2021.
