Beautifully bizarre — an unforgettable, existential Essential Mix.

A one-hour selection by @nicolas-jaar aired first on May 15th, 2021 as part of the Sonic Liberation Front on @radioalhara, an initiative for Palestine by a group of audio platforms and sound artists who came together to unify their sound for Palestine and protest against the ethnic cleansing of the Palestinian people.

"Hello,
 
Thank you for inviting me to be here today. 

These are difficult days and it is difficult to express the feelings that I have inside. 

We have seen the horrors of Israeli occupation. We have seen the hypocrisy of the European and American media. We have heard the silence of our peers. And we have felt the screams inside Al Aqsa, in Sheikh Jarrah, in Gaza, in Haifa, in Jaffa, in Lydda. But this is only news to those who don't know. 
In reality, this is nothing new. 

The past 2 weeks have been a microcosm for the past 20 years, the past 40 years years, the past 70 years. 

The Israeli government is a racist settler colonial project committed to the ethnic cleansing of the Palestinian people. The legacies of systemic violence, racism and dispossession shaped by colonialism must stop. 

Today this means standing up and signaling clearly our support, our solidarity and our love for Palestine. Complicity with Israeli war crimes is found in silence and we cannot tolerate silence. 

As I speak something else is happening in another part of the world that is also very close to my heart. Chileans are right now electing  155 citizens who will write a new constitution for the country. It will replace the constitution that has been in place since the years of the military dictatorship. This constitution will be the first anywhere in the world to be written by an equal number of men and women. The only reason this moment of hope is possible in Chile is because of the incredible social movements that rose up to tell truth to power, to tell the story of life in the face of death. 
The courage and determination of Chilean activists, writers, artists has been astounding. I am sure many of them are inspired and influenced by the courage of Palestinians living under occupation. 

These social movements are creating change, and the forces of Empire are having a difficult time trying to control this change. When we see Israel bombing the tower that houses AP and Al Jazeera in Gaza, we understand that this war is being waged on multiple fronts. Journalism is one of them. Art and music is also one. 

So thank you for this initiative Radio Alhara and Recordat. 

This mix is different from any mix I've ever played. 

I'm gonna play a mix I made for myself, never meant to be shared. It's the music I play to feel better, in some ways it's my own kind of therapy, it gives me hope that life can always shine in the dark."

BBC RADIO - ROBAG WRUHME MIX 2021

DJ Fog Puma aka Jean-Marie Dhur was infected by the post-punk, 2-tone and reggae virus at the age of 14, and soon acquired a solid collection of copied cassettes and mixtapes by trading with friends. A few years and some tangled cassette tapes later - initiated by the discovery of New Order's ‘Technique’ album - came the second epiphany in the form of Chicago house, Detroit techno, and communal euphoric dance experiences. Both spheres eventually merged into a preference for hypnotic, rhythmic, dubby, minimalist sounds with a counter-cultural and leftfield attitude. The affinity for this is still reflected in Fog Puma's DJ sets, which move along atmospheres rather than clearly defined genre boundaries. In addition to his dance sets, he also likes to play calmer music, which he presents monthly in the show Abendlandung on Cashmere Radio. And he is co-owner of the specialist bookshop Zabriskie in Berlin-Kreuzberg.

The source of inspiration for a Fog Puma mix are the sounds that are created incessantly by the countless great non-conformist, creative and experimental musicians worldwide - as well as moods that are generated by experiencing and connecting with plants, animals, landscapes, skies, weather and other natural phenomena. The mix for LiO is also inspired by the sounds on the chill-out floors of the 90s, which were mandatory for a proper rave back then.

Other People is a record label started in New York City in 2013 by Nicolás Jaar. In its 10 years of existence, it has featured the sonic work of over 70 music releases, highlights include Terepa (2015), a "telepathic" collaboration helmed by Kohei Matsunaga (aka NHK’Koyxen) featuring Rashad Becker, Charlotte Collin, Lucrecia Dalt, Laurel Halo, Julia Holter, Grégoire Simon and Kohei himself, Caves (2021), a compilation of silences featuring Laraaji, Aho Ssan, Ana Quiroga and more, Weavings (2022), a collaborative live piece with Juliana Huxtable, Ellen Fullman, Wukir Suryadi and Rully Shabara of Senyawa, Angel Bat Dawid and others. The label has also put out the 1990 spoken word piece "Conspiracy of Women" (2015) by Lydia Lunch, as well as Tomaga & Pierre Bastien's collaborative album entitled Bandiera di Carta (2019) and Lucrecia Dalt's Esotro / Veta release (2014) with remixes by William Basinski and John Wall. It has also featured the likes of Magdalena Dàugosz, Barbara Zawadzka, Bernadetta Matuszczak, Krzysztof Knittel, Bogusław Shaeffer, Saint Abdullah, Eomac, Dienne, Charbel Haber, Okokon, Against All Logic, FKA Twigs, Darkside, Nicolás Jaar and others. The label’s current contract states that an artist on the label owns all their rights and decides the full percentage of the revenue they wish to make from their releases on the label, after recoupment. Any of the label’s profit gets given out to artists in forms of grants, workshop and educational initiatives. The label has collaborated in this form with more than three dozen exceptional organizations and individuals in the past three years. Although the label works not-for-profit, it is not a registered non-profit.
