Others to the Front is releasing its first compilation EP next week, celebrating the second anniversary of the House of Others podcast, with the desire to continue strengthening the community, in permanent construction around HoO and its radical love for underground House culture, which has as its mission to bring back this Queer & POC music to its legitimate audience.

All the DJ-producers participating in this EP are already HoO's acquaintances. They shared their story in a 2-hour mix, making us walk through their vision of House, in dialogue with their other lives, resistant and rebellious lives, never banal and always disobedient.

Formed by 14 tracks that in alliance reclaim House music as the music of the otherness, as a safe place to let ourselves be, to question and seduce ourselves to the rhythm of melodies loaded with for-coming. 14 dissident pills make up this compilation, a celebration of the existence of Queer & POC bodies. An EP that dances collectively in search of the common history of the otherness. Deep bass lines that tell our history in the key of Groove, a history which remains, even today, clandestine, and unknown to many.

Get ready to travel through suggestive and dissident soundscapes, experiences of otherness that connect us and remind us that we are not alone, rhythms that move and transform the soul of the listener. The tracks of this EP tell a story and exist with you, they are just there and ask for nothing in return. They are there for when you want to feel them. They exist in case you need them. They are there for you to play on any dance floor that sweats glitter. They exist for you to dance to how, where and with whom you want. 

HoO vol.1 is the shared experience of 14 stories of 16 producers who travel together transatlanticaly, during 1 hour 18 minutes 41 seconds, in the format of House electronic music. A journey to dive into the overflowing world of the most underground House culture. All are welcome. Who enters, stays. "Every opportunity to learn something new is what's going to grow your craft as an artist." The Toronto star talks discipline and gaining self-confidence as a producer.

Cindy Li, AKA Ciel, always seems to be one step ahead. The label head, DJ, producer and activist has a hard-won career that dance music producers dream of—when she's not playing underground institutions across the globe, maintaining radio residencies, planning her own parties or collaborating with her favourite artists, she's thinking about what's next. "I'm the type of person that I'll stay up trying to finish everything rather than going to bed knowing that I didn't finish everything on my list," she tells RA's Nyshka Chandran in this week's episode.

The Toronto resident is a conservatory-trained pianist who uses the discipline she learnt from a lifetime of lessons to balance DJing and production. "For me, it is challenging to juggle both because they use very different parts of my brain," she describes. A deep digger whose love for atmospheric textures and '90s grooves influences her fresh take on UKG, tech-house and jungle, Li has been putting out music since 2017. She has various EPs and singles under her name, plus several joint releases with the likes of Dan Only, D.Tiffany and Priori but says she didn't always have the confidence for a solo full-length.

"I never thought I could write an album," she admits. But after playing live for the first time at MUTEK Montréal in 2021, that changed, leading to the 2023 release of Homesick, her debut album. "Don't ever let fear influence your decision-making," she says, describing how that show pushed her to overcome lingering doubts in the studio.

2. DON ESQUIVEL – TRÓPICO

We continue with a dubby vibe. Its dawn in Mexico and there is a breeze. We dance on a beach with a sample under our arm that transports us directly to the Solid Groove label. It could be the 2000's. It's a soundscape full of sentimental and nostalgic pads, where Mr. Fingers and Basic Channel merge in love and harmony in a village in Michoacán. How good this trip feels.

BIO:
DJ and producer originally from Michoacán Mexico and based in CDMX. Don Esquivel focuses his sound on house music, techno and its variants. Part of the roster of Por Detroit, an itinerant rave in Los Angeles and CDMX oriented to dissidents.

"A track inspired by the beach, the sunrise and the breeze, made from a sample that I found by chance, but I had heard it in a Solid Groove song of the 2000's, so the sound of the song also seeks to give that feeling for that years, something nostalgic and full of sentimental pads."

He has made notable releases on respected local labels like Juke Bounce Werk and Gyration Station, as well as New York's Fortune Signal. As a skilled DJ, Akumen seamlessly blends house, breaks, and rhythmic techno, delivering high energy sets at bars, clubs, warehouses, and through his monthly streams on Dublab.

It could be Sunday, the bells are ringing and it's time to go to mass. We are in Berlin, it sounds like a small town in Brazil. Its 7 o'clock in the morning, we reluctantly live it behinsd and are ready to dance to this exhilarating spiritual rhythm. Our past must be danced through. We swap the church pews for Tribal House and get back on the dancefloor.

BIO:
GIO (Giovani Goltara, he-him) has discovered that electronic dance music is where he feels most comfortable expressing himself. Ever since his early rave days, he's been drawn to electronic beats infused with Latin American rhythms. Digging through records from the 1990s, GIO uncovered a treasure of productions that appropriated diverse sonorities from the global south. Now, he's on a mission to bring these sounds back and re-appropriate them for queer dance events, particularly in Berlin, where he's been organizing parties since 2021. One of his standout events is Coven, which focuses on celebrating queer Latin American culture through music and dance.

"Missa 7am is a visit to my Christian roots. Originally from a small town, my main musical outlet was church. For a decade, I played keyboards at Catholic masses, weddings and events. As I recorded the synthesizers for this track, I remembered Sunday mornings, reluctantly going to church, except when I was there to play. The atmosphere of those days remained etched in my memory, but fortunately, I traded the church pews for the dancefloor."

Without going far, while staying at 130bpm with the celestial rhythm ascending, in this Italo-House-Trance spacey cut. We are still in Berlin, even though now it smells like Santiago de Chile, reminding us of the migrant experience, that strange idea of crossing the Equator in a matter of hours, and crossing the fragile summer-winter temporal membrane. The impossible bouquet.

BIO:
Feasting (Miguel Jara, he) is a migrant queer DJ, born in Santiago de Chile and based in Berlin for more than a decade. His music makes visible the queer roots of electronic music and the dancefloor as an engine for social change. 
His spectrum of sounds has a broad understanding of house in the realm of deep, progressive and power house, with a high energy and marked Latin influences.
In 2020, together with his queer family, he founded the Coven collective, his current residency and main project, an event that has gained respect and recognition in the Berlin underground, focusing on migrant artists and/or artists from the global south.

"The image behind this track comes from an art historical topic: the impossible bouquet. Baroque painting was obsessed with the impossible idea of reproducing images of flowers that in reality could never coexist given their blooming at different times of the year. The migrant experience (especially for those of us born in the southern hemisphere) sometimes goes hand in hand with experiences of contemporary existence: the strange idea of crossing the Equator in a matter of hours, and of course, experiencing winter and summer separated by the fragile temporal membrane of a transatlantic flight."
