These recordings were made at the site of Sculptor's Cave in Covesea, near Lossiemouth in northern Scotland. Three caves on this part of the coast have extensive histories of human occupation. The caves has many signs of ritual activity, including a number of carvings on the wall, some of Pictish origin. There is evidence of decapitated heads being displayed, and of a large number of human heads being displayed. Ritual activities are usually accompanied by music, and since other Pictish carvings feature harps prominently, it was decided to record harps and lyres at this site. The instruments are reconstructions based on archaeological evidence, played by Simon Chadwick and Bill Taylor. The nearby bird colony, and the sounds of the sea are also clearly audible. The recordings were made by Rupert Till.

Music and dance are a fundamental part of human activity, emerging alongside shelter and fire as a communal technology that enabled people to build cultures that held knowledge and relationships together, and that built what we know today as humanity. We have evidence of musical culture from as long as 40,000 years ago. What was the music of the past like and how does it relate to music today? This presentation explores why people across the world and across the millennia have sought entrancement from music by entraining their bodies to external musical rhythms. Rupert Till will discuss how and why we explore altered states of consciousness through music, traveling to other places within ourselves. He will examine the similarities between the ritualistic cultures of the ancient past and the electronic cultures of today, and hope to learn something as result of what it means to be human.

Dr. Rupert Till is Reader in Music at the University of Huddersfield. He has taught popular music and music technology in universities for over 20 years, and is Chair of the UK and Ireland branch of the International Association for the Study of Popular Music. His research has explored electronic dance music, club cultures, trance and spirituality.

Ringing through connected disconnected spaces which is a new continuity..
 
Conceptually, this work challenges ideas of territory, control, transmission, tranception and how we listen to the world. The tunnel is live and interactive: the participant becomes the transmitter and is transmitted/ displaced (in sound) in many actual places in fractions of milliseconds. A recursive eavesdropping becomes possible in this unseen territory. Live sound travels from location to location, reverberating in each space. A kind of anonymity reverberates through the piece. It is a borderless territory designed for listening. Acoustically the reverberations and other characteristics of each space add up, thus creating a new recombinant space that is the distorted and warped sum of its parts. The directional audio tunnel - loudspeaker to microphone to network device to loudspeaker to microphone to network device and so on … traveling around the world through sound.
 
Rooms, each with microphone and loudspeaker, are daisy-chained in a directional live audio tunnel - each individual space, is a node and is able to receive audio from another node through the internet and play it into the space through a loudspeaker, record the reverberations and other ambient sounds of the environment and send it back over the internet to the next similar device with no noticable latency...
