Slow Time was a three part sound installation presented within the London Canal Museum’s public exhibition spaces and the unique former ice well in the basement. With reference to the building’s former uses, the installation features multi-channel sound compositions consisting of close-up recordings of ice melting and forming; field recordings from an ice manufacturers and an ice skating rink, along with recordings made on the Regent’s Canal. Recordings were also made site-specifically within the extraordinary architecture of the Victorian ice well. A loudspeaker encased within ice plays white noise, gradually melting and becoming louder throughout the duration of the exhibition.

Sound Artist Rob Mackay has been working alongside Ecologist Simon Pickles from the North and East Yorkshire Ecological Data Agency. With the help of Simon’s knowledge, Rob has created a map of the wood through sound, from the roots to the canopy and through the seasons. His audio map combines field recordings with “sonifications” (making data into sounds) of different ecological information.

Activation

"They stuck in 3D" is an idiom referring to people who are limited by their perception of reality, focusing on the physical world and material possessions rather than spiritual growth or deeper understanding.

This is a sound installation—referred to as a sound bath— I created for Trapholt Museum’s exhibition on Nanna Ditzel. The idea was to design ambient, meditative sound that complemented Nanna Ditzel’s furniture, inviting visitors to settle in and experience the work in a deeper, more sensory way.

Our sound bath plays continuously in a quiet exhibition room where Ditzel’s designs are displayed. It echoes the playful, abstract, and timeless qualities of her work, with nature as a strong point of inspiration—just as in Ditzel’s own creations .

For "Gummicellen", I crafted a 30-minute ambient piece with sound design inspired by the texture and feel of rubber. The goal was to create an immersive, otherworldly atmosphere—perfect for visitors who doze off comfortably in the soft, foam furniture.

The installation is meant to be simple, accessible, and calming—just like sitting in Ditzel’s furniture should feel. It’s ambient sound that invites you to pause, breathe, and let the design and atmosphere carry you into a moment of quiet reflection.

We set up a surround sound system in the exhibition rooms so that the music would surround the visitor. The score was then controlled from a laptop with Ableton Live.

The sound bath was exhibited from the 16 to 17 March 2024.

The Danube river is translated as a space-time loop. A data carrier linking past, present and future. The river with its water as circulating matter is being continuously overlaid with information and narratives.

The Danube has been also a common thread running through the story of my family, connecting our lives spatially and time-wise. My brother lives near the source of the river, I live in Vienna - the middle course, and the town where my father grew up and we spent time as kids is at the lower course - Lom, Bulgaria. Linz, where the installation was exhibited is also a partner town of Lom. Overlaying my personal family narrative on top of field recordings made at the river site in Linz, the exhibition space - a former car wash - amalgamate the river as a multitude of places and stories.

Tom White is a London-based artist. His multidisciplinary practice spreads across sound, moving image, installation and live performance. Past projects include commissions and appearances for Radiophrenia, Glasgow (CCA); BRAUBLFF (KRAAK & De Player); Whitechapel Gallery, London & Colour out of Space Festival, Brighton. Collaborators include Maya Dunietz, Kieron Piercy, Ben Knight, Stuart Chalmers and most recently in Al Fresco with Lia Mazzari & Sholto Dobie .

He won the British Composer Award in 2014 (Sonic Art) for Public Address, commissioned by South London Gallery. In 2016 he founded Apologies in Advance; a platform for artists presenting work in progress performances.

Minerals Studio+ is a design studio and multi-media label for music that is forward-thinking, minimalist and direct. Established in the summer of 2016 by Andre Futrell, the label features cutting-edge artists, composers, electronic and acoustic musicians, visual and graphic designers, and vocalists which represent the depth and dimension of the “Soul Tech” movement. Inspired by nature, crystals and indigenous rhythms, Minerals Studio+ produces new palettes of soulful electronic sounds influenced by many genres. Futrell’s high-art aesthetic reflects his love for using sound as a healing medium to enrich people’s lives and cultivate an expansive worldview.
