Jules Dago has been organizing regular electronic music events for 25 years, starting in his student flat. He spearheaded PsyTech in 2005 and Twilight (Kollektiv) in 2010, focusing on Techno with this platform. Jules organized and played in various venues in Leiden, including LVC, Club Bazart, Nighttown, Multipleks, Bar & Boos, and de Vrijplaats, as well as festivals like Teknival and Occupy A'dam.

In recent years, Jules Dago has organized and played for various venues around North Holland, such as Dock x Microclub (lockdown events), Binckhaven, Club John Doe, and Roots Amsterdam.

Jules also helps out and plays at a new organization called Blended, spearheaded by Robbers and Niels van der Broek, which is organized mainly in Amsterdam. Jules Dago is primarily interested in authentic underground sounds and prefers raves over clubs.

He believes that most commercial places nowadays have lost depth and quality in electronic music. During the Covid Lockdowns, Jules Dago was the first to continue organizing events in the Zuid Holland region, even when it was difficult to find willing DJs due to fearmongering of the state.
These events were called the Dock, and later, during COVID-19, he also worked with the boys from Microclub in secretive private events.

In his own words about this period: "It was a stressful but also an intimate experience, meeting true Techno lovers to come together for the music, in this surreal time. We somehow stayed undetected and unfined for over 20 parties during this period. "The artists of Twilight Kollektiv can be listened to on over 150 musical platforms.

They have released three albums via First Impression (Jaydee) and have tracks on five Various Artists albums. The artists have played in many venues and underground facilities and at various festivals, such as Mystery Land, Innercity, and Trance Energy. Mikka has played in venues around Europe and Mexico at the ZIJ festival and clubs in Germany and Basel.

Their latest album, Make Yourself Comfortable, is available on various platforms such as Spotify, YouTube, Beatport, Amazon, Deezer, Google Video, and many others. First Impression has released all the tracks so far. The group is starting its label and plans to release its first tracks in April or May 2024.
The DJs and producers from Twilight Kollektiv are Jules Dago (founder), Eyowa, Numtek, Mikka, Groovekaiser, Infame, Erres, Maxina Laura, Tomek Sikora & Amiro Jongeman.

İrvin Cemil Schick holds a PhD from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and has taught inter alia at Harvard University, MIT, and İstanbul Şehir University. He is the author of The Erotic Margin: Sexuality and Spatiality in Alteritist Discourse (1999), The Fair Circassian: Adventures of an Orientalist Motif (in Turkish, 2004), and Writing the Body, Society, and the Universe: On Islam, Gender, and Culture (in Turkish, 2011). His current research interests include the Islamic arts of the book; gender, sexuality, and the body in Islam; and animals and the environment in Islam.

Susanna Ferguson is a Ph.D. Candidate in Middle Eastern History at Columbia University. She is currently working on a dissertation entitled "Tracing Tarbiya: Women, Gender and Childrearing in Egypt and Lebanon, 1865-1939."

Matthew Ghazarian is a Ph.D. student in Columbia University's Department of Middle Eastern, South Asian, African Studies. His research focuses on the intersections of sectarianism, humanitarianism, and political economy in central and eastern Anatolia between 1856 and 1893.

The Ottoman Erotic | İrvin Cemil Schick

E308 | In 1665, an Izmir-born Rabbi named Sabbatai Sevi (1626-76) was proclaimed to be the Jewish Messiah. His messianic movement attracted tens of thousands of followers and become known throughout the early modern world. Ottoman authorities, however, arrested Sevi in 1666, and, under duress, the charismatic leader converted to Islam. Many members of his movement followed suit and became the communities who today are called dönme (which literally means "convert"). After Sevi's death, dönme communities continued to outwardly practice Islam but inwardly retain practices of Judaism. In this episode, Cengiz Şişman talks about his research on the development of Sevi’s movement, the trajectories of dönme communities, and questions of conversion and communal boundaries, which became more pressing in the late nineteenth- and twentieth-centuries.

Cengiz Şişman is Assistant Professor of History at the University of Houtson, Clear Lake, where he works on the history of religions, conversion, irreligion, messianism, mysticism, crypto-double identities, missionaries, and religion and modernity. He also teaches courses on world history, Islamic empires, and the modern Middle East.

Sabbatai Sevi and the Ottoman-Turkish Dönmes | Cengiz Şişman

E324 | Genetics have emerged as a new scientific tool for studying human ancestry and historical migration. And as research into the history of genetics demonstrates, genetics and other bioscientific approaches to studying ancestry were also integral to the transformation of the very national and racial categories through which ancestry has come to be described over the course of the 19th and 20th centuries. In this podcast, we speak to Elise Burton about her research on the development of human genetics in the Middle East. Burton has studied the history of genetics within a comparative framework, examining the interrelated cases of human genetics research in Turkey, Israel, Iran, and elsewhere. In this episode, we focus in particular on the history of genetics in Turkey and its relationship to changing understandings of nation and race within the early Republic. In a bonus segment (see below), we also look under the hood of commercial genetic ancestry tests to understand present-day science within the context of these historical developments.

Elise Burton just earned her PhD in History and Middle Eastern Studies from Harvard in May 2017 and her BA in Middle Eastern Studies and Integrative Biology from UC Berkeley in May 2010. Come October, she will begin a Junior Research Fellowship at Newnham College, University of Cambridge.

Chris Gratien holds a Ph.D. from Georgetown University's Department of History and is currently an Academy Scholar at the Harvard Academy for International and Area Studies. His research focuses on the social and environmental history of the Ottoman Empire and the modern Middle East. He is currently preparing a monograph about the environmental history of the Cilicia region from the 1850s until the 1950s.

Shireen Hamza is a doctoral student in the History of Science department at Harvard University. Her research focuses broadly on the history of science and medicine in the Islamicate Middle Ages, and more specifically on the history of women's health.

Maryam Patton is a PhD student at Harvard University in the History and Middle Eastern Studies program. She studies the history of ideas and books in the Early Modern Mediterranean.

Genetics and Nation-Building in the Middle East | Elise Burton

One component of the growing networks of information in the increasingly connected space of the Mediterranean world was espionage. As we learn in our latest conversation with Emrah Safa Gürkan about his new book Sultanın Casusları (Spies of the Sultan), the Ottoman Empire was both party and subject to the fascinating exploits of early modern spies. In this episode, we learn about the lives of Ottoman spies profiled in Gürkan's book, and we consider how the transformation of espionage in the Mediterranean relates to the development of early modern empires.

Chris Gratien is Assistant Professor of History at University of Virginia, where he teaches classes on global environmental history and the Middle East. He is currently preparing a monograph about the environmental history of the Cilicia region of the former Ottoman Empire from the 1850s until the 1950s.

Spies of the Sultan | Emrah Safa Gürkan

E340 | In this episode, we explore the life and times of Roxelana, also known as Hürrem Sultan, a slave girl who became chief consort and then legal wife of Ottoman Sultan Suleiman I (r. 1520-1566). We trace Roxelana's probable beginnings and the possible paths that took her to Istanbul, asking how she rose above her peers in the Old Palace to become a favored concubine and then the wife of the Sultan. We explore her relationship to other women at the Ottoman court, the politics of her motherhood and philanthropy, and her role in Ottoman diplomacy. In the end, Roxelana's work, her relationship with Suleiman, and the unusual nuclear family they created despite the otherwise polygynous patterns of reproduction at the Ottoman court would transform the rules of Ottoman succession, the role of Ottoman royal women, and the future of the Empire as a whole. The life story of this one remarkable woman sheds light on many facets of the history of the Ottoman Empire, showing how a single individual's story can serve as a lynchpin for grasping the complexities of an age.

E456 | What did science look like in early modern Istanbul? In this episode, Harun Küçük discusses his new book, <i>Science without Leisure: Practical Naturalism in Istanbul, 1660-1732 </i>(University of Pittsburgh Press), which tackles this question in a bold fashion. Tracing the impact of late seventeenth and early eighteenth transformations of the Ottoman economy, Küçük argues that the material conditions of scholars greatly deteriorated in this period. The changes did not, however, stop people from wanting to know about the world, but rather reoriented their work toward more practical applications of science. Küçük contrasts these conditions with those in some parts of northwestern Europe, where a more leisurely version of science--often theoretically inclined--emerged. He also grapples with the parallels between educational institutions in the early modern period and today.

Harun Küçük is Assistant Professor of History and Sociology of Science at the University of Pennsylvania. He has previously published on Ottoman translations of scientific texts, science and religion, and the interaction between science, technology and statecraft in the early eighteenth century. His recent book, Science without Leisure: Practical Naturalism in Istanbul, 1660-1732, takes a look at the relationship between the material conditions of scholarship and the content of science in the Ottoman capital. He is currently engaged in two collaborative projects on early modern Ottoman history and is writing a book-length essay on the relationship between time and scientific labor.

Sam Dolbee is a postdoctoral fellow in the Program in Agrarian Studies at Yale University. He completed his PhD at New York University in 2017. His research is on the environmental history of the Jazira region in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century.

Zoe Griffith is Assistant Professor of History at Baruch College, CUNY and completed her Ph.D. at Brown University in 2017. Her research focuses on political economy, law, and governance in the Ottoman Arab provinces from the 17th to the 19th centuries. She records mainly in New York City.
