Here's the mix I did for the BBC Radio 1 - November was HIP HOP TAKEOVER month. I did an exclusive mix for the "Semtex Show" alongside Mixmaster Mike. A few other DJ homies who did mixes were DJ Craze, DJ Shadow, DJ Cash Money, Just Blaze and Mannie Fresh. Jurassic 5 - The Way We Do It

It's a classic understatement to open an introduction such as this by saying that @Source_Direct's music means a lot of things to a lot of different people. But it's true. Having surpassed seminal reputation years ago now, the duo are consistently name-checked by artists in and outside of drum & bass as real inspirations. Theirs was a very poignant kind of drama when it emerged; a playfully experimental formula that's just lasted and lasted. To this day some of their earliest music still sounds futurebound, like it could fully still be out there somewhere, treading an avenue that people are still fully scared to properly explore or embrace. 

One half of Source Direct, Jim Baker, is now back and regularly DJing again and ahead of appearing here in Room One on Friday as part of S.P.Y's Back to Basics party, we're overjoyed to be able to host this exclusive mixtape from Baker himself. As you can imagine, for fanboys like us, this is quite the coup and as such it comes partnered with a gloriously in depth interview over on The Quietus, which he highly recommend you go and read once you've pressed play on the soundcloud player below. In it Baker reveals his plans for new music whilst talking about the early days and the fractures that lead to the duo's eventual split.

Adam (A Skillz) is a really really really nice guy. Like, so super nice. He is also super into juice. I think you need at least a community college course to operate the juicer in his kitchen. One time he made me a juice of watermelon and carrot and apple and mint and ginger and some other stuff and it tasted amazing. It was the highlight of that particular day. I now have a juicer too but it is not as fancy as Adam's. Get Got is a tune we started in Chichester in England and finished in Melbourne in Australia. I think. We work on a lot of music together so I may be getting confused. It combines elements of records we have previously heard and enjoyed and also some new elements and makes a song out of those things. It works well in a disco-funk-bass-rave environment, though I could also see it helping you workout in the gym. I don't go to the gym so I can't promise anything. Well, actually, I can promise that A Skillz makes amazing juice and also amazing music.

Hip Hop Lives was recorded live for Adam 12s Afex night in 2008. Afex is one of LAs most prominent conceptual hip hop nights, covering the era from early eighties to mid nineties.

Solid Steel (24th May) Following on from last year's treatment of 'Paul's Boutique' (by DJ Food, Cheeba and Moneyshot), United States of Audio does the same with De la Soul's groundbreaking album 3 Feet High and Rising. It's not just a mix, but more like an audio documentary about an album that is also about to celebrate it's 25th anniversary. In his own words;
'Several years in the making and including around 100 tracks, this is my personal tribute to De La Soul's '3 Feet High and Rising'. Using original sample sources, album tracks, interviews and rarities, 'How High's The Water Mama' tells the story of one of hip hop's most influential albums.
When De La Soul's debut album dropped in 1989 I was ten years old. Yet, by some stroke of amazing good fortune a cassette copy of '3 Feet High and Rising' found its way into my hands thanks to my best mate's older brother (though I'm pretty sure said brother had no idea of this fact!). The music was a revelation and had a significant influence in shaping my musical tastes - in fact I can't think of any other album that has had such a profound effect on me as this one. Thus '3 Feet High and Rising' holds a special place in my musical affections. Now, some twenty-five years after its original release, it's time to pay my respect to Pos, Dove, Mase, and Prince Paul...'
