With its unique history filled with both triumphs and dark chapters, public health researchers and professionals have an ethical responsibility to examine the past as they aspire to shape the future of public health by conducting effective and ethical health-related research and work today.

In this episode, Shivani interviews the esteemed ethicist and historian of Public Health, Dr. Laura Bothwell, who discusses how the history of public health has influenced the present. In this informative conversation, Dr. Bothwell sheds light on the weight of history, and discusses the structural obligation that health professionals have to address inequities and institutional biases and their contribution to many of the public health challenges we face today.

In May 2024 the Phelan US Centre spoke to Jeff Legro, University Professor at the University of Richmond, and Visiting Professor at the Phelan US Centre for 2023-24. They spoke about the US’ role as a “unipolar” country in the world, conceptions of sovereignty, both in the US and abroad, the potential future of US foreign policy, and the relationship between nuclear weapons and globalization.

They also discussed Professor Legro’s work with the Phelan US Centre’s Undergraduate Research Assistantship programme and students Ayush Das and Evelyne Ong.

Navigating political legitimacy in a polarised world

This is a beautiful and imaginative setting of Emily Dickinson’s poem that also gives the accompanist a wonderful part to play. While it is not complicated, it nevertheless requires particular attention to the text and long legato lines, making sure that the four-bar phrases are sung in one breath; this is possible if the tempo indication is observed. Take care of the rhythm coming off the tie in the opening phrase; it has to be smooth but also in time.
