Papaver for choir

Split into six continuous movements, this dramatic piece contrasts moments of tranquility with cacophony, freedom with oppression, and organisation with chaos! Taking inspiration from Sun Tzu's ancient manual on strategy, 'The Art of War', I started to imagine the orchestra as a sort of army trying to follow Sun Tzu's sage advice, e.g. ‘Ultimate excellence lies…in defeating the enemy without ever fighting’, but falling into a maelstrom or chaos and mutiny at every turn.  

Sun Tzu's 'five fundamentals' of 'The Way', 'Heaven', 'Earth', 'Command' and ‘Discipline' became important musical characters in the piece and loosely form five of the six main sections. After battling not only within themselves, but also with the 'offstage' orchestra, the piece reaches an ethereal, transcendent epilogue with the music rising ever higher and higher. 

To add an extra dimension to this piece, I was able to work with the CCSO's Artist in Residence, Lesley Fotherby, whose artwork is going to be projected above the orchestra during the performance. Lesley has been busy creating abstract watercolour sketches based on early rehearsals of the music, which in turn have been up on my wall as inspiration while completing the piece.

Episode 23- Jenny Lange on the gothic history of neuroscience, a Halloween special

On this episode, Michael O. Emerson looks at the legacy of his and Christian Smith's 2000 book Divided By Faith, which was a landmark work on understanding race and religion in the United States. A quarter century after its publication, Emerson and Smith revisited the scholarship and the data to see what has changed and what reconciliations still remain out of reach. Today he shares the five biggest updates that were necessary for the new edition.

In August 2025, the Shanghai Cooperation Organization held its 25th annual summit in Tianjin, China, with the country’s leader Xi Jinping, hosting representatives from more than 20 countries including Russia’s Vladimir Putin and India’s Narendra Modi. The absence of the United States in this gathering of global leaders may tell us about how China is competing with the US and building its own global order.

To discuss China’s strategic competition with the US, and how it is evolving under the Trump administration, in September 2025, the Phelan US Centre spoke to Professor Evan Medeiros, the Penner Family Chair in Asian Studies and the Cling Family Senior Fellow in US-China Relations at Georgetown University.

Will AI free us from work?

In this episode, we discuss the powerful, magisterial closing pages of Annie Ernaux’s The Years (pp.182-225) alongside philosophical work in progress by Alice Harberd, one of our hosts. In this paper, Alice considers various ‘narrative’ theories of the self, and argues that, when it comes to the articulation of a sense of self, ‘narrativity is a choice’. We examine Ernaux’s intertwining of personal and sociological selves and ponder to what extent it embraces, or resists, narrative form. We are joined in the UCL Studio by Emmanuel Campion-Dye, a Philosophy PhD student and an ever spirited and probing member of our Philosophy and Literature Reading Group.

What really drives inequality?

Some clips from my orchestral piece, 'In Search of Strategy', commissioned as part of the 'Adopt a Composer' scheme and nominated for a British Composer Award.

In Search Of Strategy_Clips

Commissioned by Saint John’s College, Cambridge, this setting of short episodes from one of the older texts of the York Mystery Play Cycle, is predominantly based on the Gospel of Saint Matthew, chapter 3 verses 1 - 17. It has a very simple musical structure, alternating boisterous, jig-like, two-part homophony with much slower, reflective, polyphony. The harmonic nuances recall the folkmusic of the Middle East (the actual location of John’s nervously hesitant baptising of Christ).
