Listen to this life of cellist Jacqueline Du Pré (1945-1987), cellist, from the 'Oxford Dictionary of National Biography'.

Jacqueline Du Pré was born in Oxford in 1945 and received her first cello at four, after hearing the instrument on a BBC 'Children's Hour' programme. At five began to have lessons at Herbert Walenn's London Cello School.

Her Wigmore Hall début in 1961 launched Jacqueline's career. She was immediately signed up by London's most prestigious agency and received numerous offers of concerts and broadcasts. In her first major orchestral date, in 1962, she appeared with the BBC Symphony Orchestra at London's Royal Festival Hall in the work with which she was to become most closely identified: the Elgar cello concerto, which she had studied since the age of thirteen. The years from 1965 to 1970 marked the zenith of Jacqueline du Pré's career as one of the most exciting and charismatic performers of the day. No contemporary cellist, save perhaps Rostropovich, possessed a more opulent tone, or played with such impassioned, elemental force.

Jacqueline Du Pré (1945-1987), cellist

In 1964, the Beatles swept the world,  including Argentina. It didn't take long before local bands began imitating its sounds, first in English, and eventually in Spanish. But the 1960s and '70s were also a turbulent time, with military dictatorships — and Argentine rock musicians, inspired by the Beatles, spoke up against the human rights violations taking place. The World's Lucia Benavides speaks with Argentine musicians from that time period to tell the story of a Latin American rock revolution.
