I played bass and electronics with ambient music pioneer Jon Hassell from 2014-2020 and designed the final software-based iteration of his live/studio rig, which we used in the sessions for his last two albums, Listening to Pictures and Seeing Through Sound.

Unfolding is the first track from my forthcoming album 'Ambient Bass Guitar' (to be released June 9 2023)which began to take shape in 2022 when I took the software setup I’d made for Jon and used it with my bass guitar, opening up new frontiers of sonic exploration. 

I also decided to take Jon’s approach to recording here: one take, with no edits or overdubs. He always felt that the best way to record was to catch the magic of the moment.

All the sounds you hear were produced in real time using complex chains of processing and effects, a live dialogue between a musician and his computer. These sounds are made possible by advanced audio technologies but every note here was played by human fingers on metal strings.

Look, I have to watch the news every day. It is making me feel like I'm 16 years old again. Surrounded by intolerant confinements. And all the punk rage of the late 70s and early 80s comes right back. We took the world back, won rights, had good economies, improved things. Now we're back with liars and fearful bigots taking control. So here's my techno punk ambient track for the day. I remain hopeful for the future, but know what we had to live through last time to get there.
