‘You Gave Me Wings’ Recalls a Love Story and Friendship

New England, June 7, 2016 – Poet, lyricist, singer and multimedia artist Ingrid Chavez has today released a very personal musical tribute to her friend Prince Rogers Nelson on the day of his birth. In the new song ‘You Gave Me Wings,’ Chavez’s lyrics tell the tale of love and inspiration that began in 1987 when the two artists met and became immediately enchanted one cold December night in Minnesota.

They met in a nightclub after Ingrid sent him a note reading “Smile. I love it when you smile.” When Prince asked Ingrid her name, she said she was Gertrude, and Prince naturally had an immediate, equally whimsical reply; “I’m Dexter,” he said. From then on, that’s who they were to each other.

Out of dreams and whispering dandelions, their starry nights over three months that winter gave birth to a wintersong, and everything changed for the both of them. Ingrid became his muse and ultimately a diversion he much enjoyed from his plan to release ‘The Black Album.’ He shelved those plans and instead began writing songs that would comprise the album 'Lovesexy,' a very different album and one that would demonstrate his unwavering commitment to following his own art and heart. Ingrid became Prince’s ‘Spirit Child’ in life and in the film ‘Graffiti Bridge,’ as Aura, his angel.

But the graffiti bridge they painted together was definitely a two-way avenue and Prince’s impact on Chavez was likewise transformative. Her debut album entitled 'May 19, 1991,' was produced by Prince at Paisley Park Studio's, and he was the first to give her words life in song. They were two albums both of their dream time, coming together and mirroring one another in a divine rhyme with 'I Wish You Heaven' and 'Heaven Must Be Near.'

Collaborating with Danish musician Christian Rønn, AKA Ganga, a composer of electronic and rock music, Chavez offers a poetic homage to her friend, muse, Svengali. She thanks Prince for everything he gave her in a fond reminisce of their magical time together -- and with their fans who took the journey with them. ‘You gave me wings, and I gave you words and songs to sing...’

“It is impossible for me to fully recognize the enormous impact that Prince had on my life,” said Chavez. “Were it not for him, my career in music would certainly look very different. Indeed my life would look very different. My life pivoted when I met him, taking me to new places and introducing me to new people and collaborators. Prince shook my life to its very foundation, stirring a creative output I was not prepared for and gifting me with a lifelong confidence and drive to share my voice. He gave wings to many beautiful should who took flight with his encouragement. I am eternally grateful for his love and friendship. “It’s springtime in Heaven where your light will forever shine bright. but here on earth an angel left an indelible mark on us all.”

Debut single 'Sick Of Hate' was released in 1999 on Day Release records, swiftly followed by live performances across London and Berlin. Signed to Fire Records in 2001 and opened shows for, amongst others, Mark Eitzel and British Sea Power.

Debut album 'He Was A Woman' was released in 2002, followed by the critically acclaimed 'No Love' E.P.

In 2004 David performed at SXSW festival in Texas, recorded a number of sessions for BBC Radio, and composed music for a series of short experimental films.

A ltd edition CD single 'I'm Spending Christmas With Jesus This Year' was released at the close of 2005 and was described by the Western Mail as 'Probably the most tragic christmas song ever produced.'

After a myriad of singles, ep's and collaborations, including a contribution to 'Chamber Music', a tribute album to James Joyce (featuring Sonic Youth, Ed Harcourt, Magnetic Fields, Mercury Rev, &amp; many others)

David's second full length vocal album, 'The Beautiful Trustful Future' was released in March 2008 on Fire Records, and features the 7" single 'The Man Who Stayed In Bed Forever'. 

A special ltd edition CD album titled 'Black Flowers' (four track instrumental recordings '97-98) was released in February 2010 on Trace Recordings.

Summer and winter tours of Poland were undertaken in 2010, along with a 3 week trip to New Hampshire to continue writing and recording with Ingrid Chavez.

A third album of songs, 'Patron Saint of Missing', featuring Yazz Ahmed, Chris Prosser and Dario Bernal-Villegas, was completed in in 2012, but remains unreleased.

A founder member of free improvisation group Four Seasons Television, who released their debut album 'Skip All' in 2013.

A new instrumental E.P. titled 'The Glaze' was made available as a download on Bandcamp in 2013.

A ltd edition CD was released in 2014 titled 'Museum of You', followed by an appearance at the Opole Songwriters Festival in Poland.

Collaborated with Abigail Hopkins on a piece for a project setting the James Joyce book 'Finnegans Wake' to music. This was released by Waywords and Meansigns on May 4th 2017.

A new vocal album 'Private Ruins (Vol 1)' was released on June 5th 2017.

In October 2017 a new single, 'Into the Dawn' was recorded in New Hampshire USA with DJ, musician, producer and Ingrid Chavez collaborator Marco Valentin. This was released in December 2017, accompanied by the song 'Sat on a Table'.
After returning to London, collaborated with Chavez and Valentin for what would become 'Driving to the End of a Dream' a song that appears on Ingrid's 2019 album 'Memories of Flying'.
In Summer of 2019 performs live in London with Ingrid Chavez and her band in promotion of her recent album 'Memories of Flying'.

In 2020 an unmastered instrumental recording 'The Dead House' was made available on Bandcamp, followed by the 24 minute meditative piece 'All Our Sundays' in 2021.

On May 1st 2024 a new instrumental album was released. 
'Nervous Animal' was recorded at home in London and features David Comidi, Gordon Davies and Ryder Sharkey.
