All things inspirational and influential - the records which have shaped their sound as a producer or selection as a DJ.

Advice for the DJs, producers and artists of our community: You only get out what you put in. Find space to contribute to your scene before you expect anything from it. Whether it's running a club night, starting a label, collaborating, sharing knowledge or promoting other artists, giving your energy to the scene is vital. I truly believe that so many of the opportunities I have received have come from the energy I have contributed - I see it as a really beautiful exchange.

An incredible morning starting off the infamous 'Capriati All Day Long' Sunday session! The sun was beaming through the windows of Bret as it was rising throughout the hours of my set. I really loved showing a deeper side to my sound, playing different to what people might usually know me for & really warm up the club from the very start. One of my favourite sets in my career so far!

Either way it is clear that the British / Brazilian, Amsterdam based artist’s star is firmly in the ascent. Now in its 200th instalment, this Podcast has given voice to a diverse offering of global talents across the musical spectrum, from the democratic rhythms of zeitgeist appropriate techno and house through to more avant-garde synthwork.

This next guest has cast a large shadow over the technosphere, so large in fact, that no introduction could fully encompass the breadth of his achievements. But in brief: Ben Klock is a titan whose formative years were spent playing marathon mixes to the crowds at Berlin’s (then recently opened) Berghain. Off the back of his endurance sets and the club’s success he became a household name whose influence grew to be felt across the world, with a body of work that includes appearances at an exhaustive list of clubs and festivals, a number of hot releases on Ostgut Ton and an equally respected self-run label (Klockworks) to boot. On this second imprint, his own productions have repeatedly seen the light of day, alongside those from the likes of DVS1, Sterac, Stef Mendesidis and younger talents like Temudo and Vil & Cravo. The sound, ubiquitous as it is, will be familiar to anyone involved in the world of electronic music and there’s good reason for that: Klock’s deep and percussive work and ability to pull from a wide range of influences have earmarked him as a unique agent for the techno cause. Mala Junta rabble rousers DJ Tool and D.Dan are up next for Zenaari Mix 010, but leave your biases at the door because this isn’t their usual high-speed mischief. In the vein of Zenaari’s hallmark off-kilter electronics the Berlin based pair are here instead to take you on a journey within. This one’s less for warehouse raving, more for solo spiritual contemplation: an invitation to probe the subconscious and transcend material experience. It’s a thorough exploration of their ambient predilections that range from featherlight textures to faded melodies that lilt like waves on a metaphysical shore. This liminal collage of gentle lullabies and acoustic murmurs is soft and a touch plaintive, but warm and loving all the same. Invoking everything from glitchy IDM to ballads that bend towards the strange and pineal, a technicolor dream sequence conjured up by this offbeat techno double-act.

Zenaari Mix 010 - Dj Tool & D.Dan

Returning to the Podcast for yet another round of Mach 4 techno comes Mala Junta head honcho DJ Tool, a live recording from his clubnight’s Bassiani takeover back in March. The Danish-born, German-based selector and former Fast Forward collaborator is every bit the sound and feel of Copenhagen, the gritty, trance-focused beats that have found a home in the Danish city run through his work like liquid mercury and now have Berlin in their grasp. And for one special night earlier this year, alongside D.Dan and Yazzus, Tbilisi too came under his fevered spell. With a manifest focus on inclusivity, support, friendship, and community, his signature sound is faster than a speeding bullet, one that whips up every ounce of a crowd’s energy and leaves behind the type of excited chatter you hear at the cloakroom at the end of the very best nights. Saoirse is a DJ, producer and radio host. She first cut her teeth on the Irish radio channel RTE, and soon after relocating to London she’d started playing regularly on Rinse FM. Living in the capital she turned heads playing at parties like Toi Toi – she also became more than familiar with all of us as a regular at our Ricardo Villalobos marathon sessions. 

A record collector from a young age, Saoirse typically blends house, techno, dub and garage with a charming subtlety. We experienced this first hand when she came to open up Room One last month. Playing ahead of Loco Dice and Craig Richards, Saoirse’s deep and far-reaching selections went down as one of the night’s highlights – so much so that we unlocked the recording from the vaults for everyone to hear. 

Taking in 90s house through to rolling Romanian minimal, it’s a heady trip that sounds just as engrossing through a pair of earphones as it did on our Martin Audio rig.

If you ever thought that our podcast series with all the recording from The Monastery Festival was finished then let us surprise you with this gem of set by the amazing Ali Farahani.

This set is very close to our hearts. It was the first time Ali joined our family. We gave him an early morning opening set of the mainstage. This time is challenge for any musician. You need to find the delicate balance between slowly waking up the crowd as well as getting them in the mood for yet another beautiful day ahead. 

He killed it.
We recall that we woke up from this incredible selection of tracks not immediately know who was performing at the time. He will be back. Not on an opening hour but somewhere somewhen we can shine a light on this incredible star.

Kerri Chandler has what you might call a taste for props. 99 percent of the time he may be DJing on a completely standard setup, but every now and then he'll throw a curveball in the mix. Sometimes it's something relatively straight-forward, like a keyboard. Sometimes it's much more exotic. He's been known to rock a laser harp. On at least one occasion he appeared onstage alongside hologram vocalists.

That in mind, it's no surprise Chandler is skilled at what might be the most esoteric music player to DJ with: the reel-to-reel tape deck. Unwieldy as they may be, reel-to-reel's sound good enough to earn themselves a spot in the known canon of DJ equipment. Back in the day, "every major club had at least one tape machine it the booth," Chandler says. "Unlike turntables, you don't have to worry about skipping, vibrations or a dirty stylus. In fact at times if I saw the needle was a bit dirty while I was playing out at a club, I would make a quick copy to tape for about a minute, run it back, play the tape, clean the stylus and bring the record back in."

Reel-to-reels run in Chandler's family—he's dedicated this set to the memory of his father, whose birthday was February 27th. They also loom large in his musical education. Seeing Frankie Knuckles and David Morales mix on them was one of his formative experiences. Most DJs would only use one alongside their other gear, but Chandler likes using a few—"one for loops and effects and the other sets for songs and content." Mixing on them isn't easy, but if you feel so inclined you can do a set completely on reel-to-reels. In this 70-minute recording at our London office, Chandler does precisely that.
