Story
Bernardo del Carpio is a legendary hero of the Spanish Middle Ages, born of the forbidden love between an Asturian princess and a Castilian nobleman. His life is intertwined with betrayals, epic battles, and a tireless quest for his father's freedom.
Forbidden Origins and Upbringing at Court
Bernardo was born in the castle of Saldaña, the fruit of a secret relationship between Jimena, sister of King Alfonso II the Chaste of Asturias, and Sancho Díaz de Saldaña, a powerful count. Upon discovering the affair, the king ordered Sancho imprisoned in the castle of Luna and Jimena confined to a convent. Bernardo was raised at court as the king's son, unaware of the truth about his parents.
Invincible Knight and Bold Strategist
Trained as a knight, Bernardo stood out for his strength, courage, and mastery of the arts of war. He became the leader of the king's personal guard, but upon discovering his father's fate, his loyalty turned to defiance. He demanded the release of Sancho Díaz, but Alfonso II refused. Thus began Bernard's struggle, facing impossible tasks and formidable enemies to win the monarch's favor.
The Battle of Roncesvalles: Glory and Myth
The most famous legend places him at the Battle of Roncesvalles (778), where he commanded an army of Basques and soldiers from the Emirate of Córdoba to confront Charlemagne's troops. There, according to the romances, Bernard defeated the Twelve Peers of France and killed the legendary Roland, seizing his sword Durandarte. This feat established him as a symbol of Spanish resistance against Frankish power.
Tragic Destiny and Eternal Legacy
Despite his victories, Bernard never managed to free his father, who died in prison. The hero, marked by tragedy, retired from the world of war. His tomb was visited by Charles I in 1522 in Aguilar de Campoo, and his figure inspired works of the Golden Age, romances, and even literary projects by Cervantes.
