MUSIC LIVE FROM LEICESTER SQUARE THEATRE

After firmly establishing itself as one of London’s premiere comedy venues, Leicester Square Theatre is branching out to become a major destination for live music acts.

The 2010 ‘Live from Leicester Square Concert Series’ got off to an amazing start in July this year with three sold-out exclusive UK gigs by the Grammy award-winning, singer-songwriter, Macy Gray.  This was a unique opportunity to see a global star up close at one of London’s most intimate, 400-seat music venues.

A packed autumn concert series features music greats, pop, jazz and dance icons, soul divas, classical crossover and contemporary and musical theatre acts.  These range from an exclusive gig in Nov with Hazel O’Connor singing Breaking Glass live to celebrate 30 years of the iconic film ‘Breaking Glass’; Ruby Turner, one of the best voices the UK has to offer also performed a brilliant set earlier this month.

Future shows come from Lenny Zakatek, (the voice of the Alan Parsons Project), The Christians, prime movers of the Soul Scene, Rockapella, direct from the USA, the leading a cappella group’s first UK show, John Mayall, the Godfather of British Blues, David McAlmont, Jocelyn Brown and many more.

Leicester Square Theatre has an illustrious history as a live music venue, as the Cavern in the Town in the 60’s, beat group The Small Faces had a regular residency, in the 70’s as the Notre Dame Hall, The Rolling Stones played there along with The Who.  But punk ruled supreme and the venue hosted some riotous early landmark gigs by The Sex Pistols.  The Clash previewed their ‘London Calling’ material there in 79 before recording the seminal album the following month.  Leicester Square Theatre opened as a West End theatre as The Venue, with the world premiere of Boy George’s musical ‘Taboo’ in 2002.

The ‘Live from Leicester Square’ banner firmly places music back at the heart of the West End with Leicester Square Theatre once again one of London’s premier music venues.
