Seal Woman                                                                          

Wide Northern skies
the land below of snow 
and the sea of broken ice

Fast fading day
A lonely hunting man
kayaking across the bay                

And the seals are coming close
to his boat peeking out from between the icefloes
And the seals have always seemed to him
quite human with eyes of love and wisdom

Dancing in the Northlight
A group of women
their skin silver shimmering
Their furs laid aside
they are sealwomen
every year for just one night

And the man is awstruck and he shins
up the rock stealing one of the sealskins
and one woman is left behind
when the others slip back into pelt and tide

“Please, be my wife“
the hunter says
and she looks at him deep inside
“if not all your life,
then for seven years“, he pleads
and finally she agrees

So she goes with him and they live by the shore
After some time their son Nuniq is born
And in the winter nights she tells him the tales
of the journey of the salmon and of the seals and the whales

Seven summers have come and gone
The woman`s eyes are dull and her human skin is torn
but when she wants back what belongs to her
the man says: “No! Or you will leave us. I can`t give you your fur!“

But that night their son Nuniq has a dream of an old seal
showing him where to find what his father won`t reveal

“Mother!  
Look, I found 
what is truly yours
Mother!“ he cries out loud and 
she takes him in her arms

Then she fills his lungs with air
so he can swim with her
Deep down they dive

to her home of the seals
and to where her soul heals
and her eyes, they shine

with joy of these days
on which the child stays 
with her and her kind

“My child, I love you with all my heart
but you`re born to the land and we have to part
Whenever you touch the things I carved for you
it will be as if my spirit spoke through“

And Nuniq grows up to be a gracious young man
He leaves the coast and he travels the land
and when he comes back he has learnt to drum,
to sing and tell stories and to read dreams like a shaman

But every night with the waning moon you can see him kneel
far out on an rock bending down to a seal

And she is said to be 
so I`ve been told 
like the 
wild sea, 
a wild soul
