“A group of perfect strangers” was how The Edinburgh Evening News described this collaborative ‘internet’ band when they released their debut single ‘The Last Race’ in January 2019 and they have never met collectively but are still producing music together.

Out of View was started in 2016 by songwriter/drummer Dougie Bonner (former drummer with Edinburgh band ‘The Guilty Party’) from Edinburgh now living in France. He had a song idea ‘The Last Race’ and contacted his old friend, Guitarist Ian Whitehall (original guitarist with The Soup Dragons, Glasgow) living in Edinburgh and the idea and song progressed…via email.

When Dougie returned briefly to Scotland he found online and made contact with Bass player Niyi Oludipe from Nigeria (living in Edinburgh), Vocalist Tara-Lynn Sharrock from Melbourne, Australia (X-Factor Australia 2011 Top 6 Under 24 Girls) and Ross Weir a Highland Piper from Aviemore in the Highlands of Scotland and together they collaborated and released their first single. 

As this was (and still is) a remote, invisible, internet band, Dougie decided to call it 'Out of View’…as it seemed apt.

After their debut single release Dougie immediately started work on the follow up ‘See me Now’ and again called on his new ‘band mates’ to collaborate. He had also written a part for Cello in the new song so the search was on and through some musician contacts was introduced to and met Jules Horne, a Cello player from the Scottish Borders.

‘See Me Now’ was released in 2020 and Dougie continued writing and during the next few years new musicians joined ‘The Band’ replacing Niyi and Jules who left to pursue other projects.

Ian Olliver (original member and Bassist of PJ Harvey Band) replaced Niyi on Bass Guitar and 2 more songs ‘Alive’ and ‘Falling’ were produced with this lineup 

Dougie reworked ‘The Last Race’ and also wrote the Celtic Vibe Instrumental track ‘The Greenhill Dance Club’ and was joined by multi-string instrumentalist Patrick Heinisch who plays Violin, Nyckleharpa & replacing Jules on Cello.

The sound has changed a little since the beginning but still has a Celtic Fusion (Worldbeat) energy incorporating traditional and contemporary instruments.

All instruments were recorded by each band member independently and sent to Dougie for composing and producing the songs which are released independently on BIG PAW RECORDS.

THE GUILTY PARTY WERE ORIGINALLY BROUGHT TOGETHER IN DECEMBER 1987 AFTER A MUTUAL FRIEND OF DOUGIE BONNER (DRUMS) AND IAIN BRUCE (BASS) INTRODUCED THEM TO JIM TROTTER (VOCALS). AT THE BEGINNING OF JANUARY 1988 INTRODUCED BY JIM THEY MET SCOTT ROBERTSON (GUITAR) AND HAD THEIR FIRST 'JAM' SESSION iN A SMALL COLD FARM OUTHOUSE ON THE OUTSKIRTS OF EDINBURGH. THE MUSIC CAME TOGETHER IMMEDIATELY AND THEY DECIDED TO CONTINUE AS 'THE GUILTY PARTY. A MONTH LATER THE BAND WERE PLAYING THEIR FIRST GIG TO 200+ PEOPLE AT ‘THE VENUE' IN EDINBURGH WITH 6 SONGS IN THEIR SET.

OVER THE NEXT FEW MONTHS THEY HAD GIGS COMING IN REGULARLY AT MOST OF THE LARGER VENUES IN EDINBURGH INCLUDING ‘THE VENUE' AND ‘THE MUSIC BOX' AND THE EARNINGS FROM THESE ALLOWED THEM TO SPEND A WEEKEND IN THE STUDIO IN JULY 1988 (7 MONTHS AFTER GETTING TOGETHER) TO RECORD THEIR FIRST DEMO TAPE RED SEAL. WITH DEBBIE BRIERLEY SINGING BACKING VOCALS ON 'LOST'.     

THE FIRST TAPE ENABLED THE BAND TO SECURE EVEN MORE GIGS IN EDINBURGH AS WELL AS OUTWITH. DECEMBER 1988 SAW THEM JOINED BY COLLETTE DALY AS A BACKING VOCALIST AND WITH ENOUGH MONEY IN THE BANK RETURNED TO THE STUDIO IN MARCH 1989 TO RECORD A COUPLE OF NEW SONGS ONTO TAPE ENTITLED 'OUT ON A LIMB. 

UP UNTIL THIS TIME A FRIEND OF THE BAND CALLED NORRIE MONTAGUE HAD BEEN EXTREMELY SUPPORTIVE AND TURNED UP AT MOST REHEARSALS AND GIGS AND HAD ENCOURAGED AND MANAGED THE BAND TO A CERTAIN EXTENT BY ARRANGING THE ODD GIG ETC. TIME WENT ON GIGS WERE PLAYED AND THE BAND DECIDED THEY NEEDED TO PUSH THAT BIT HARDER TO GET MORE PUBLICITY AND RECOGNITION AND HOPEFULLY A RECORD DEAL. RAB MCNEIL CAME ON BOARD AS MANAGER AND ALONG WITH HIS CONSIDERABLE INVESTMENT THE BAND BECAME SELF SUFFICIENT BY HAVING THEIR OWN TRANSPORT. PA AND MIXING DESK AND NEW REHEARSAL SPACE IN A LARGER HALL THROUGH IN THE WEST. RAB WAS ABLE TO PURSUE MORE GIGS IN SUCH PLACES AS INVERNESS. ABERDEEN. GLASGOW, HAWICK, GALASHIELS AND PEEBLES.

IAIN BRUCE WAS SOON TO BE REPLACED BY DAVID COULTER ON BASS AND THE NEXT DEMO TAPE 'CRY' WAS THE MOST MATURE MUSICALLY SO FAR WITH SIX SONGS, RECORDED SOMETIME IN EARLY 1990 'LOST. WAS TAKEN FROM THE FIRST TAPE 'RED SEAL AND WAS REWORKED WITH THE ADDITION OF COLLETTE INSTEAD OF DEBBIE AND ALSO 'SHIVER. REWORKED FROM THE SECOND TAPE OUT ON A LIMB.  
AGAIN TIME WENT ON AND EVEN MORE GIGS WERE PLAYED SOMETIMES 2 OR 3 TIMES A WEEK WITH MORE CHANGES TAKING PLACE. FOR VARIOUS REASONS THE BAND PARTED COMPANY WITH RAB FOLLOWED BY SCOTT (ONE OF THE FOUNDER MEMBERS OF 'THE GUILTY PARTY’) SO THE SEARCH WAS ON FOR A REPLACEMENT.                  
      
'GHOST SESSIONS WAS RECORDED DURING OCTOBER 1991 AND SOUNDED MORE PROFESSIONAL AND POLISHED BUT WITH A HARDER EDGE THAN PREVIOUS RECORDINGS. THE TAPE WAS WELL RECEIVED AND ONE OF THE TRACKS 'CARNIVAL OF SOULS' WAS PLAYED ON THE DOUBLE JOINT' ON RADIO FORTH ALONG WITH A SHORT LIVE INTERVIEW BETWEEN BRUCE FINDLAY AND JIM TROTTER. STILL PLAYING LIVE AS MUCH AS THEY COULD AND WITH A FAN MAILING LIST OF AROUND 100 NAMES ON IT. A SMALL FOLLOWING BUT THEY REMAINED OPTIMISTIC ABOUT THEIR FUTURE. THE EUPHORIA WAS SHORT LIVED.
                                                                                                                                          DAVE COULTER LEFT NOT LONG AFTER DUE TO WORK COMMITMENTS BUT STAYED UNTIL SECURING A REPLACEMENT AND JOHN SHANNON STEPPED IN AS BASS PLAYER. THE SONGS WERE GETTING BETTER AND BETTER BUT WITH THE YEAR COMING TO AN END AND FRUSTRATION SETTING IN ONCE AGAIN THE BAND WERE ON THE DECLINE. 'THE GUILTY PARTY' PLAYED THEIR LAST GIG ON 'HOGMANAY 1992' TO A PACKED HOUSE AT THE CAFE ROYAL. EDINBURGH.
