Kindly introduced to us by the friendly crew at @12th-isle, who released their amazing debut album 'Periphera' a year ago, these masters of modern ambience gift us with another selection of sonic mind travellers.

"These are tracks we developed between 2013-2021 and have featured heavily in our live performances, evolving over the years. The live show is the core of our project, creating specific listening environments for the experience of imaginary solutions and possible worlds. We've taken this to marshes, forests, woods, quarries and churches, sometimes with big audiences, sometimes just with a handful of close friends. Recent events forced us to take a pause from live performance and gave us time to compile this record, which reflects the range of moods and tones that feature in the shows. Hopefully we'll be able to return to performing soon. In the meantime we hope you enjoy the sounds. "This world is the closed door. It is a barrier. For our 50th cassette release, we're very happy to welcome in Shakali (aka Simo Hakalisto) born in Finland, though now residing in the Czech Republic.

"Aurinkopari plays a lot with polarities as it seeks to find something celestial in the mundane. The brightest sound of the album was captured in the darkest night of the year. Sine waves, scaled according to old wartime engineers, ended up sounding like a magic flute. A hydrophone detected other-worldly sounds of a drowning compost and a ceremonial Javanese gendèr was recorded in a bunker… While the processes of recording the album were often playfully esoteric, the music itself is warmly heartfelt." - Shakali

Encompassing global and local music traditions and pre-Midi times, this album feels very organic, playful and warmly connected to a natural, higher consciousness state of being....We couldn't ask for a better way to celebrate our 50th cassette release.

Bill Kouligas is the mind behind one of modern electronic music's greatest and most innovative labels, PAN. His remarkable ear for music meant that he released some of the earliest records from luminaries like Yves Tumor, Helena Hauff and Eartheater, helping to jumpstart several remarkable careers. And each PAN release is lovingly and lavishly packaged like an art object in itself, an approach you can read more about in this month's feature-length cover story.

The Berlin artist's RA Podcast is an audio companion to that cover story, and it underlines not only Kouligas's range as a label A&R but also as a DJ. Reflecting the label's evolution from straight-up noise to musique concréte to leftfield dance music and then avant-pop, the mix cycles through stages of strange, staggered beats, almost celestial ambient music, passages of overwhelming noise and sound that sublimate into floating clouds before solidifying back into club music, and a couple engaging spoken word passages and endless manipulations of the human voice. In other words, it sounds a lot like PAN.

cccore is one of the core members of Garage Noord, a club in the north of Amsterdam. A space that has been a welcome home for many of us within the leftfield musical territory.
