Natural Error - My Masterpiece

A reminder that I am an old.  (Oh, lordy...am I EVER!)  And I remember watching as much of the 1984 Winter Olympics from Sarajevo as I could.  This wasn't the first Winter Olympics I'd watched on tv, but it may have been the first where I was very aware that these games were being held somewhere specific.  

I had always grouped Yugoslavia in with the Iron Curtain countries--which, for someone in 1984, was terrifying...because everything was terrifying back then.  (Every day felt lke The Day Before "The Day After")  

I didn't understand that Yugoslavia, though being an ostensibly communist country, was not directly under the Soviet thumb--that they were the leaders of a group of nations wanting to stand on their own without siding on either side of the cold war.  

In 2013, my comedy career gave me the chance to go to the Balkans--the first time (and sadly, so far, only time) that I'd gone further into Europe than the UK.  I didn't know what to expect, but I had my memories of 1984...and I'd watched years of news reports about the wars and the ethnic cleansing that ended with the Yugoslavian experiment to end, as they split into various countries.  My trip took me to Zagreb Croatia, Llubljana Slovenia, Belgrade Serbia, and Sarajevo Bosnia & Herczegovina.  

And I loved the trip.  Loved the places I got to see, loved the comedians I got to give a seminar to, I loved the audiences that came to see  me perform.  I'm aching to go back--to stay at the Esplanade, to enjoy Cevapi in the open air of Sarajevo, maybe to see parts of the area that I didn't manage to see on my trip twelve years ago (I never even made it to the coast!)  

It was like living in a Rick Steves episode...and I found it hard to square the genuine enthusiasm I felt for each other, everywhere I went...with the violence and atrocities that I know are now that far in this area's past.  

My host, who drove me around and made the whole thing possible, is a true Yugoslavian...not only having ties to most of the Balkan countries, but he also served in the Yugoslavian military--and he admitted that he wished that Yugoslavia still existed...rather than this patchwork quilt of embittered enclaves, still fuming at each other politically...and all of them trying to figure out how to make it on their own.  

So, Pedja...and your family...and your extended Balkan comedy family.  I miss you all and I miss having never been able to bring my wife there, as I'm sure she would have fallen in love with that region as much as I did.  If I have anything to do with it, I will return...hopefully with my kid.  

Oh, today's Interbay track, inspired by those memories and the realities of how complicated things can be there, is a liquid drum & bass track.  Not the typical sort of thing for Interbay--I've dipped my toe into drum & bass before, but it's usually jump up.  (Now, someone far more clever and knowledgeable about drum & bass than I am may have some qualms about my use of the term "liquid"--but, it is liquid to me.)  

A little energy, but not quite as manic or chopped up as what I associated with drum & bass, but I think it is pretty...with an edge of nervousness in there, too.  

I am but a tourist and I don't have any solutions to offer, but what I've experienced of the former countries of Yugoslavia, I remain a fan.  Vucko forever!
