The opening section of “Tome of Stars”, titled “Item 1: Anthesis”, comprises 21 poems that chronicle the emergence and flowering of a romantic relationship, structured around the botanical metaphor of anthesis, the period during which a flower blooms. 

"First Arrow Owned" recounts the beginnings of a romantic and spiritual bond as it transitioned from a superficial, performative intellectual engagement to physical and emotional vulnerability. The sonnet follows a trajectory from distanced interaction to irreversible surrender, sparked by a single, tactile moment: a touch likened to an arrow that pierces through defenses. The imagery is structured around metaphors of battle, courtship, and surrender, while the tone shifts from cerebral to intimate. The poem charts the initial collapse of emotional boundaries and identifies this moment as formative and binding, marking the beloved’s enduring claim on the speaker.
