Here is the text used here. The idea of the DIALOGUE CIRCLE is to listen to listening, to be mindful of thought’s tendency to identify with likes and dislikes, etc., and especially in good faith help one another by looking for contradictions. It’s a practice. Just like flute or violin. We have to work at, alone and together, every day.

Please forgive my own poor, always-almost-out-of-breath, performance. I deliberately composed the text in two very very long complex sentences, with more phrases than I can count on the fingers of one hand. I’ll post another take ASAP… LOL!

THE NEW MUSIC DIALOGUE CIRCLE:—tuning up our thinking in the daily practice of philosophy

Be simple.  A primary cause of the spiritual poverty of Western Musical Culture is not just the objectification of music and musicians, the result of more than 100 years of a vicious, all-pervasive predatory capitalism, or our tendency to force sound itself beyond its natural limits, the result of the now ubiquitous excessive use of electronic amplification, or to over-emphasize the athletic dimension of music by focusing obsessively on competition and awards, but it is also our tendency to instrumentalize music itself—that means to misuse and abuse it—for mere self-centered gain. 

For example, getting excited about what we are told are  “beautiful, talented, young female conductors” I fear mistakes obviously essential yet still mere outward gender emancipation for the primary problem of what are conductors good for in the first place? Like Generals “leading” their troops, I would argue that conductors are not only generally worse than useless, but essentially artifacts of an outmoded, highly misguided, deeply dualistic and divided culture that is still tacitly held captive by its own self-generated ensemble of illusions, illusions based largely on power, force, mechanical hierarchy, and control. Remarkably, these are the very same self-destructive desires and fragmentations the Muse and Music are there to help us heal and transcend in the first place. Think of that!

Like other “Beat Poets”, Jack Kerouac was attracted to Eastern philosophy, perception, and poetry. Together with Ginsberg and Whalen, he helped “Americanise” the haiku form and introduce it to a wider audience outside of Japan.

“The American Haiku is not exactly the Japanese Haiku. The Japanese Haiku is strictly disciplined to seventeen syllables but since the language structure is different I don’t think American Haikus (short three-line poems intended to be completely packed with Void of Whole) should worry about syllables because American speech is something again…bursting to pop.

Above all, a Haiku must be very simple and free of all poetic trickery and make a little picture and yet be as airy and graceful as a Vivaldi Pastorella.”
