To assist students with formatting their thesis or dissertation, the Graduate College provides a formatting tool, called the Format Wizard, in Microsoft Word and LaTeX. This tool will help with formatting the preliminary pages of your document, fixing the margins, and setting pagination. Please keep in mind that, regardless of whether you use the Formatting Wizard or not, you must still review your document to ensure compliance with the Graduate College standards. The ASU Graduate College Format Manual is the rubric with which your document is reviewed and will supersede your style guide and the Format Wizard.


You will need to carefully review the final document generated through the Format Wizard to ensure it adheres with your selected style guide requirements. Your document must satisfy professional standards of published research. Both your committee and the Graduate College expect to see evidence of careful attention to style and format in the document that you present to fulfill the requirements for your graduate degree.


A style guide, or style manual, is a set of standards for the writing and design of documents, either for general use or for a specific publication, organization or field. The implementation of a style guide provides uniformity in style and formatting within a document and across multiple documents. A set of standards for a specific organization is often known as "house style". Style guides are common for general and specialized use, for the general reading and writing audience, and for students and scholars of various academic disciplines, medicine, journalism, the law, government, business, and industry.


Several basic style guides for technical and scientific communication have been defined by international standards organizations. These are often used as elements of and refined in more specialized style guides that are specific to a subject, region, or organization. Some examples are:


This guide is a quick introduction to the Modern Language Association 9th edition citation style. Be sure to consult the MLA Handbook or the online MLA Style Center for detailed standards and procedures.


This document provides the campus-wide specifications for theses and dissertations presented for graduate degrees at the Graduate School of the University of Colorado at Boulder. Student services staff in the Graduate School are available to answer format questions, and the Graduate School strongly recommends that students e-mail a copy of the document for pre-check of the format to gradinfo@colorado.edu before submitting it electronically. We recommend that students consult a style guide or standard handbook for more detailed specifications. A student's department will provide information on requirements in a specific field of study.


Content developersmay be tempted to use (or misuse) constructs that achieve adesired formatting effect on older browsers. They must be aware thatthese practices cause accessibility problems and must considerwhether the formatting effect is so critical as to warrantmaking the document inaccessible to some users.At the other extreme, content developers must not sacrificeappropriate markup because a certain browser or assistive technologydoes not process it correctly. For example, it is appropriate to usethe TABLE element in HTML to mark uptabular information eventhough some older screen readers may not handle side-by-sidetext correctly (refer to checkpoint 10.3). UsingTABLE correctly and creating tables that transform gracefully (refer toguideline 5) makes it possible for software to render tables otherthan as two-dimensional grids.
