DJs Tim Martell and Esquire, the modern day Riggs and Murtaugh are back for Rarities 3!! The third instalment of the “Rarities” (Rare-80’s) mixtape series brings forth another collection of rare songs from the 80’s that were either not released as singles or fell just under the radar as timeless hits.

This 67 minute project features songs that each DJ picked and mixed individually while transitioning it to collaborative blends.

About Rarities

The inspiration behind the hybrid duo’s mix came to DJ Tim Martell by way of DJ Esquire’s online radio show, The Crossover, where he plays all genres of music. After hearing one of his 80s’ sets they started comparing their collections and the idea hit Martell, “I thought because we both have such a specific ear, that we should collaborate and do something with the tracks that we pulled.”

“This mixtape was inevitable, we have been battling back and forth that one has more track or knows more 80’s songs than other for a while! People should expect to be taken on a great ride back to a time when music was fun when they listen to this fix,” DJ Esquire explains.

A LIVE HIP HOP STORY BY RHASAAN OYASABA ON GRAPPA 2GO OCTOBER 25TH

Miles Davis’ “On The Corner”, Tribe’s “Low End Theory”, Guru’s “Jazzmatazz”, The Roots: the early-mid 90s sparked a whole new genre, a movement toward an experimental fusion between live hip hop & funky free form jazz. During that exact time frame, Rhasaan Oyasaba—a recent college grad, musician, producer, actor, writer—finds himself moving to New York and together with Guyora Kats, Jesse Murphy, Marlon Browden, Takuya Nakamura forming, by design, a live hip hop ensemble under the name of Kats Family.

Friday October 25th 10PM: GRAPPA 2GO welcomes Rhasaan Oyasaba in the EVR studio to play 1997 cassette recordings live from Manhattan hotspot Spy Bar, while sharing his story of Kats Family and its influence on the works of Brazilian Girls, Wax Poetic featuring Norah Jones, Mark Ronson, Q-Tip and so on — all happening here in the East Village.

OYASABA, the Flatbush Sound is the post-genre band led by Rhasaan Oyasaba Manning, born, raised, and presently residing in Flatbush, Brooklyn, NY, USA. The sound is timeless: electronica, phat beats, dubby bass lines, jangly guitars, psychedelica and disquieting vocals, melodic and staccato, pop formats and endless groove approaches throughout. The material is duality, inversion, self-destruction and the struggle for freedom. The point is not to point the finger of judgment, but to open the fist which suffocates the wisdom of the heart.
