Our next OYE podcast is something very special because it comes from our lovely team member Gaia aka Formella. She delivers a colorful mix that ranges from deep techno to breaks to UK-influenced beats.

Formella´s sets are known for their diversity and range, you can hear her musical knowledge gained from working in Berlin record shop OYE Records. Her sets are full of surprises, and never lacking energy. For her it’s all about connecting with the crowd and keeping them on their toes. 

London born, Berlin based, Formella has taken on the Berlin club scene by storm, playing at HÖR multiple times, including for a Typeless Records showcase, and venturing beyond Germany to renowned clubs such as Thekla in Bristol for Interplanetary Criminals UK tour and Ankali in Prague. 

She is now delving into the realm of electronic music production, honing her musical theory skills learnt from piano and side flute, to work on her debut EP.

This week’s entry to the Local Selection Mix is a long-overdue contribution from Irish stalwart, Kenny Hanlon. This 90-minute live recording from Galway’s fabled Deep Sea Dweller party sees the Apartment Records boss drenching dancers in a swirl of jerking bass-heavy half-steppers and menacing up-front acid cuts.

The 230th iteration of the Local Selection Mix comes from Apartment Records boss, Kenny Hanlon. A longtime fixture in Ireland’s dance music scene, the Dublin City native has made a name for himself as a renowned label boss, DJ, and promoter. When it comes to DJs and curators, Hanlon is in a league of his own as his sound has remained consistent and unadulterated, making him one of the few original purists left in the Irish capital.

Hanlon is best known for his work under Apartment Records, one of Dublin’s most illustrious imprints, operating since 2011. For over ten years, the label has offered intricate releases from artists such as TR One, Chase Smith, New Jackson, Belacqua, and countless more, positioning itself as a leader in forward-facing Irish dance music. Hanlon is also involved in one of Ireland’s most unique festivals, Open Ear. Kenny has tirelessly and passionately advocated for nonconformist Irish club sounds, always leaning towards the weird and wonderful corners of the electronic spectrum.

Hanlon blends the deep and cavernous tones of Detroit’s aquatic electro-sound with the screwface techno rhythms of Germany and Belgium in his live recording from Galway’s Deep Sea Dweller party. The Apartment Records boss pieces together contrasting yet functional club weapons while also weaving in and out of ambient interludes, spacey soundscapes, and nailbiting dramatic intersections. Hanlon presents a timeless mix, presented with an undeniable air of coolness.

Swiss producer Robin Félix (@felixfelixrobin) steps up to deliver the 377th edition of the IA MIX Series, interweaving a multi-rhythmic mix of textural ambient, breakbeat, IDM and experimental electronica.

Based out of the Swiss town of Biel/Bienne, Robin Félix is a self described audio naturalist, employing found sounds as the basis of his productions upon which he implies a strict rule to use at least 80% of field recording in his music. He then twists, skewers and manipulates these sounds to create the most mesmerising of sculptural sound-fields incorporating swirling radial ambiance and intricate drum work.

Mastered by Italian producer Neel, 'Senselessness 1/2' EP is a beautifully crafted vinyl, presented in gold Risograph artwork designed by Lisa Vatan - inspired by the ancient Japanese paper marbling technique of Suminagashi. With such a bold debut effort, we just had to find out more about the makings of it.

In our interview, Robin sheds light on his musical background and penchant for field recordings as well as his minimalist production technique. We also find out more about his partner's process behind the artwork and what they have planned in the near future for their freshly established record label De l'aube.
