From vintage Rock Steady tunes like the popular “Treat Me Good” and “I Am the Toughest,” a Tosh anthem, to 1970s classics such as “Can’t Blame the Youth” and the essential “Stepping Razor,” all the way to gems of the early 80s like “Buckingham Palace” and “Peace Treaty,” this mix CD has it covered! Peter Tosh Tribute MIX CD by Jah Rich

The prestigious annual WOMEX award for excellence this year goes to Andy Palacio and his producer, Ivan Duran. Andy Palacio is the leading international exponent of the culture of the Garifuna people, a primarily Afro-Caribbean community that stretches along the coasts of Honduras, Belize, Guatamala, Panama, and Nicaragua. Former punta rock star Palacio is from Belize and he now leads the multi-generational Garifuna Collective which recently made their New York City debut. The charismatic 78 year old singer Paul Nabor did a guest spot and brought down the house. We'll hear highlights from that concert and listen to Andy Palacio tell the fascinating story of the Garifuna. Andy tells us about the songs on his debut international release, "Watina." We'll also hear other surprising, unreleased music from around Belize.

Super Cat (born William Anthony Maragh in Kingston, Jamaica, 25 June 1963)[1] is a deejay who achieved widespread popularity during the late 1980s and early 1990s dancehall movement. His nickname, "Wild Apache", was given to him by his mentor Early B.[1] He is the elder brother of reggae artist Junior Cat and is considered one of the greatest deejays within the Jamaican dance-hall scene to date.
Born to a Black mother and Indian father,[2] Super Cat was raised in Kingston's tough Seaview Gardens neighbourhood, then known as Cockburn Pen, home to ground-breaking deejays like Prince Jazzbo and U-Roy.[1] At the age of seven the Soul Imperial sound system allowed him to assist them at a local club called Bamboo Lawn. He auditioned for Joe Gibbs as a singer but was unsuccessful.[3]

He began appearing as a deejay under the name Cat-A-Rock, but soon switched to the name Super Cat.[4] He also appeared as 'Wild Apache'.[4] His first single "Mr. Walker", produced by Winston Riley, was released in 1981 and established his recording career. He went on to record for Jah Thomas ("Walkathon", on which he was billed as 'Super Cat the Indian'),[2] but his career was interrupted by a period of incarceration.[4] After his release he began working with Early B on the Killamanjaro sound system in 1984,[3] and his debut album, Si Boops Deh!, was released in the mid-1980s, and included the hit singles "Boops" (which was based on Steely & Clevie's updated "Feel Like Jumping" rhythm and sparked a craze for songs about sugar daddies),[2] and "Cry Fi De Youth", establishing his style of dancehall with conscious lyrics.[4]

He started his own Wild Apache Productions label and began producing his own recordings, including the 1988 album Sweets for My Sweet.[4] He featured on the album Cabin Stabbin in 1991 along with Nicodemus and Junior Demus.[1] He had been scheduled to perform at the One Love concert in the UK in 1991, but his appearance was cancelled after the shooting death of Nitty Gritty, for which Super Cat was initially suspected but cleared in 1992.[5] Continuing success saw him move to the United States and sign a contract with Columbia Records, releasing one of the first dancehall albums on a major label, Don Dada (1992).[4] The following year, Sony Music issued The Good, the Bad, the Ugly, and the Crazy, teaming Super Cat with Nicodemus, Junior Demus and Junior Cat.[4]

Super Cat had a number of hit singles in the early 1990s, including "Don Dada", "Ghetto Red Hot" and "Dem No Worry We" with Heavy D. In 1992, he was featured on the remix of "Jump" with Kris Kross,[5] and he also collaborated with them in 1993 for their song "It's Alright". These hits made him The Source magazine dance hall artist of the year in 1993.[1] He was also an early collaborator with The Notorious B.I.G., featuring the then unknown artist (along with Mary J. Blige, 3rd Eye and Puff Daddy) on the B-side remix of "Dolly My Baby" in 1993.[citation needed] The title song, "Don Dada" was a reply to many jabs made by Ninjaman.[citation needed]

Third World are a Jamaican reggae band formed in 1973. Their sound is influenced by soul, funk and disco. Although they have undergone several line-up changes, Stephen "Cat" Coore and Richard Daley have been constant members.
Third World started when keyboard player Michael "Ibo" Cooper and guitarist (and cellist) Stephen "Cat" Coore (son of former Deputy Prime Minister David Coore), who had originally played in The Alley Cats then Inner Circle, subsequently left to form their own band along with Inner Circle singer Milton "Prilly" Hamilton.[1][2] They recruited bassist Richard Daley, formerly of Ken Boothe's band and Tomorrow's Children, and added drummer Carl Barovier and former Inner Circle percussionist Irvin "Carrot" Jarrett before making their live debut in early 1974.[1]
After recording some tracks with Geoffrey Chung which were not released, the band's first single was the self-produced "Railroad Track" (1974).[1] In their early days they played primarily in Kingston's hotels and nightclubs and (along with The Wailers) supported The Jackson Five when they played at the Jamaican National Stadium.[1]
They were soon signed by Island Records and toured Europe with The Wailers.[1] The band's self-titled debut album was released in 1976. The album included a cover of "Satta Massagana", originally performed by The Abyssinians, which became a local hit. Hamilton and Barovier were replaced by singer (and another former Inner Circle member) William "Bunny Rugs" Clarke and drummer Willie Stewart before the recording of their second album, 96° in the Shade (1977), which included several local hits. Notable among its eight tracks were "1865 (96° in the Shade)", a reference to the 1865 Morant Bay rebellion, "Rhythm of Life" and the album's only cover, "Dreamland", written by Bunny Wailer.[1] They played in front of 80,000 people at the Smile Jamaica festival in 1976.[1]
In 1977 the band collaborated with psychiatrist Frederick Hickling on the Explanitations show which was performed at Kingston's Little Theatre early the following year.[3]
Third World's greatest success came in the late 1970s and early 1980s, peaking with their cover version of The O'Jays' "Now That We Found Love" from their third album Journey to Addis, a hit single on both sides of the Atlantic in 1978, reaching the top ten in the UK.[1] Journey to Addis became a top thirty hit album in the UK.[1] They had first met Stevie Wonder in Jamaica in 1976 and the single prompted him to perform with them at the Reggae Sunsplash festival in 1981 in the wake of Bob Marley's death, playing his tribute to Marley, "Master Blaster".[1][4] Third World went on to perform several times at the festival, and they also took part in the 'Reggae Sunsplash USA' tour in 1985.[5] Wonder also wrote, along with Melody A McCully, their 1982 hit "Try Jah Love", which brought them further exposure in North America.[1][6][7] They were also guests during the third season of SCTV.
Amid claims of artistic differences "Carrot" split from the band in the mid-1980s.[1] The resulting five-piece band then went on to record more commercial tunes such as "Sense of Purpose", "Reggae Ambassador", "Forbidden Love" and "Committed".

Steel Pulse are a roots reggae musical band, from the Handsworth area of Birmingham, England, which has a large number of Afro-Caribbean, Indian and other Asian migrants. They originally formed at Handsworth Wood Boys School, composed of David Hinds (lead vocals, guitar), Basil Gabbidon (lead guitar, vocals), and Ronald McQueen (bass). Steel Pulse were the first non-Jamaican act to win the Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album.
