Sur Mazarin, Madame de Motteville, proche de la reine Anne d'Autriche écrivait ces mots : « Il était capable de plaire par son esprit adroit, fin et habile à l'intrigue, et par une manière d'agir pleine de douceur, fort éloigné de la rigueur du règne précédent, et fort accommodant à la bonté de la reine ». Si dans cette citation, Mazarin paraît arrangeant et diplomate. Il renvoie également l’image d’un homme intriguant et séducteur. Ce portrait peu valorisant a été enrichi par la plume des romanciers notamment depuis le XIXe siècle, mais également par les cours dispensés sous la IIIè République: « menteur »,  « avare », « séducteur convaincu de rien mais plaisant à tous… » Pourtant les archives que nous possédons sur le cardinal Jules Mazarin sont abondantes et prouvent la pertinence de son action politique. D'abord soldat de l'armée pontificale, il s'illustre vite par ses talents de négociateurs et devient indispensable à la cour du roi de France. Peut-on interpréter son parcours comme celui d'un opportuniste ? La Fronde ne symbolise-t-elle pas l'échec de sa politique ? Au nom de quels principes soumet-il ses entreprises de guerre ou de négociation paix ? Comment gouvernait l'homme qui a permis la transition de règne entre Louis XIII et XIV, qui a connu trois papes et aimé deux rois de France ? Mari-Gwenn Carichon reçoit Olivier Poncet.

Notre invité : Ancien membre de l’Ecole française de Rome, Olivier Poncet est professeur à l’Ecole nationale des Chartes où il enseigne l’histoire des institutions et des archives de l’époque moderne. Après son Mazarin l’Italien (Tallandier), Olivier Poncet publie dans "Bibliothèque des Illustres" (collection partenariat entre Perrin et la BnF) Mazarin ou l'art de gouverner (octobre 2021, 256 pages, 24.00 €).
