Gemma Turvey dropped by the studio on this evening to talk about a then upcoming New Palm Court Orchestra tour, featuring guest musician, cellist, Eugene Friesen. Eugene may be best known by some as a member of The Paul Winter Consort, recording primarily on the Paul Winter founded, Living Music label. Both Gemma and Eugene's music shares a chamber music sensibility, blending kinda third streamesque jazz, with folk and light classical. While compositional on record, both ensembles live performances allowed space for improvisatory flights, that really let the music (and the soloist) shine. Eugene recorded with a who's who of the early (80's - 90's) and later (00's onwards) luminaries of acoustic new age - Scott Cossu, William Ackerman, Stanton Lanier and Tom Bolton, amongst others. Eugene also featured on a great deal of Irish harpist, vocalist, composer Áine Minogue's albums. Áine is synonomous with Celtic New Age music, often recording music which is invariably pretty - her music bookends the first set.

Paul Winter championed and featured music from diverse cultures, including those of the animal world within his music. This approach to using animal sounds within composition was the launching pad for the bulk of the remainder of the show - specifically cetacea sounds and communication. Philosopher and musician, David Rothenberg explores the sound and music of cetaceans, insects and birds through his interspecies recordings and propositions. A prolific author, David has perhaps gone further than any in elaborating on the language and music of animals in relation to humans.

In The Quiet 072 - a mix

I'm a fan of experimental ambient, sound-art and global music/sounds, and then some. 

Between 2012 - 2016, I broadcast In the Quiet from the studios of PBS 106.7FM. My main intention was to explore ambient music from around the world in all of its forms - music that gilds, and sometimes engulfs our silences. Every here and there I'll post some mixes - I hope you enjoy them. ( Essentially, I'm using works created by musicians as colours on a palette - for an aural painting. That's how I see and would like my mixes to be received. )
