In 2015, the four members of Prep came together to cut deep grooves that mine contemporary R&B and electronica while hearkening back to the soft, sheer sound of the late ’70s and early ‘80s. The love for that style united vocalist-lyricist Tom Havelock, keyboardist Llywelyn Ap Myrddin, drummer Guillaume Jambel, and producer Dan Radclyffe. Prep is pop music that feels tip-of-the-tongue familiar even though you’ve never heard it before. They have a massive following in some Asian countries, especially Indonesia, Thailand and The Philippines, collaborating with local stars Live and in recording. Their self titled debut album arrived in 2020, followed by “The Programme” (produced by Renaud Letang) from 2024, featuring the original version of “Call It”, their cooperation with legend Eddie Chacon (of Charles & Eddie – “Would I Lie To You” fame). So how did the collab come together? We asked the Preps: “The first time we heard Eddie Chacon’s “Holy Hell” we fell in love with it instantly and thought “we have to do something with this guy”. A year later we were going to be in L.A. for a few days, so we had a word with our label, they got in touch, and next thing we knew there was a session in the diary.
That one day with Eddie at the Stones Throw studios in Pasadena was one of the best we’ve ever had, where everything just happened very naturally: we met, we got on, had tacos, Eddie had a melody idea, we put a beat down, chords down, the equipment worked, the stars aligned… We wrote “Call It” in an afternoon. It’s “Georgy Porgy”, it’s “Always There”, but really it’s neither. It’s us and Eddie Chacon, channeling a lot of good feeling through a roomful of drum boxes, synths - and an electric sitar.”
We here at TSTD headquarter are huge fans of the original track already, but we quickly had the idea to have L.A.’s Turbotito remix the track… and a dream come true.

This L.A. duo comprises of Simon “Woolfy” James and Dan Hastie and they’ve been releasing music since 2000 for a who’s who of contemporary disco/electronic labels: DFA, Rong, Future Classic and Permanent Vacation. Their latest album “Destinations” (on Permanent Vacation) is their fourth studio album. The pair are committed to a laudable task: making California into an outpost of the Balearic islands – endless summer, guaranteed! Their music combines the classic West Coast sound with a twist of dark disco and a twilight vibe. This exclusive track is something of a disco odyssey! Close your eyes and “Seeds” will recreate the warm glow of a Los Angeles sunset, backed by the distant rhythm of the Pacific. A deep, rolling Moog bassline drives the journey forward, steady and hypnotic like the open highway. Lush horns rise and fall like the city’s hills, while shimmering synthesizers paint neon streaks across the sky, capturing the euphoric feeling of returning home. This is one invitation to dance under the palm trees you won’t want to decline.

With two critically acclaimed compilations already under his belt, DJ / collector miche returns to Mr Bongo with the third instalment of his With Love series. Testament to his ever-expanding taste, Volume 3 isn’t just a subs bench call-up from the past compilations, it’s an evolution and progression casting the net deeper and wider than before.

Keeping true to the series, but with some fresh surprises along the way, this carefully curated compilation is a celebration of soulful, independently released music from across the globe, and the amazing (often unsung) musicians and vocalists that made these sublime records.

Across the third volume, miche explores a jazzier side of his tastes. “The deeper I went, the more I found myself gravitating towards jazzier music - not leaving soul behind, but following that same feeling into new territory”, he explains. Tracks like the gliding jazz funk found on Late Nite Music Band’s ‘Sundance’, or the glorious jazz-soul number ‘In Flight’ by Spectrym are shining examples of this.

That defining soulful thread of previous volumes is still in full effect throughout this latest edition. “There’s a healthy dose of impossible-to-find soul gems that have that unmistakable, heartwarming feel. Tracks like John Simmons' 'Ain't Nothing Like The Love', which I've adored ever since Zaf Love Vinyl played it, sit perfectly alongside records like Le Cop and New Way”, states miche.

The addition of some top-tier Turkish music showcases another side to his ever-broadening taste. Nükhet Ruacan's 'Gölge' is something unique, a floaty Brazilian-inspired gem recorded in Turkey and not what you’d typically expect from Turkish records of this era.  

It also wouldn’t feel right to leave out a stop in Brazil, with miche looking to the work of Carlos Bivar whose track 'Amargo Amar' carries that undeniable groove of samba-funk from Rio.

Spreading the With Love message far and wide the series has led to miche DJing across the globe, “from batucada sessions in Timisoara, to all-night sets in a club in Beijing, and even an eight-hour Root Down With Love stage takeover at We Out Here festival, joined by Danilo Plessow, Jeremy Underground, and of course, my mentor and buddy Rainer Trüby.”

Volume 3 then, carries that message even further. It’s an eclectic but intentional collection, built for the music lover who wants to discover something new. Working just as well as a soundtrack to cook dinner to, as it does keeping a packed dancefloor moving into the small hours.

B.U.M.P. (California/Mexico)
In pop music, a little mystery goes a long way. And for maverick James Matthew VII, aka B.U.M.P., we are working with a mysterious maverick. We believe that he turns out these gems, somewhere south of California or in the north of Mexico – the great man is deliberately vague on this point. However, he did take time to share that this track was “Written, produced and recorded on a nude beach in Oaxaca Mexico by James Matthew Seven.” Fine with us! Deep research from TSTD’s elite internet scouring interns reveals that James has been part of many musical projects to date, and that he mainly is a guitar player in a hardcore band. Nice! We discovered the 3 tracks James wrote as B.U.M.P. in 2022. We liked them so much that we were about to release them, when something of a bump in the road stopped the collaboration. But we never give up and good things eventually come together, so here we are.
