Hoy queremos hacer un ejercicio de justicia poética. En el mundo del espectáculo hay dos tipos de personas: los que hacen cosas sin parar y los que hacen algo y luego se pasan dos años hablando de ello. Ya se sabe, quién se mueve no sale en la foto.

Nos gustaría dedicar este #freemusicfridays al primer grupo, y concretamente a un maestro semianónimo, excepto para los más cinéfilos. Se trata del guitarrista y arreglista Alessandro Alessandroni. Cuando empezábamos con el proyecto de The Pinker Tones tuvimos la oportunidad de conocerle bien. Es una de la personas más dulces, sabias y venerables que hemos conocido. Mr. Furia incluso tuvo el honor de tocar sus dos guitarras míticas, la Fender Stratocaster con la que tocó aquellos maravillosos riffs de "Por un Puñado de Dólares", "La muerte tenía un precio" y "El bueno, El feo y el Malo" y también la guitarra española con la que se acompañaba en las partes silbadas. Por cierto, aprovechamos este momento de atención pública para desmontar de una vez por todas el mito de Curro Savoy: él nunca trabajó con Morricone, fue Alessandroni quien silbó todas las partes, quien tocó todas las partes de guitarra y dirigió a sus Cantori Moderni en las partes corales.

Y no sólo eso: Alessandroni también canta la archifamosa canción que Piero Umiliano escribió para la banda sonora del documental "Sweden Heaven and Hell", Mah-Na Mah-Na. La señora Alessandroni cantaba los coros.

Hoy os regalamos nuestro remix de este tema. Francamente, aunque tiene mucha gracia, no suena demasiado bien. Pero le tenemos un cariño enorme, porque si no nos falla la memoria, este fue el primer remix que hicimos como The Pinker Tones.

21 years after starting what is the world’s longest running consecutive club session – the Brighton Jazz Rooms – comes this celebratory compilation album on Mr Bongo Records presented by its founder Russ Dewbury.

Musically the Jazz Rooms did not follow any fad or fashion. Rather it created its own and this has been the key to its success and is reflected in the album's track selection. If it's good, it gets played at the Jazz Rooms.

Over the years, just about everybody in the scene has manned the decks at the night. Luminaries include Gilles Peterson, Baz Fe Jazz, Paul Murphy and guests from all over the world such as Rainer Truby, Kyoto Jazz Massive, Espen Horne and many more. Legendary US keyboardist Weldon Irvine described it as "an international brotherhood" while Straight No Chaser Magazine called it "a legendary affair that all should attend."

Originally signed to BGP Records as A+R chief, Dewbury was instrumental in the rediscovery of artists including Jean Jacques Perrey and Terry Callier, who he subsequently managed. His own albums include the compilations Africa Funkand Club Africa on Strut Records and Freedom Time and Jazz Bizniz on Counterpoint Records. His last compilation Pulp Fusion/Africa Funk released on Harmless Records achieved significant sales around the globe.

Habibi Funk will be a new sub label of Jakarta Records, dedicated to re-releasing arabic music from the 1970s and 1980s. It's a label and platform for funky/soulful and/or psych influenced music from the Arab world of the 70s and 80s.

Dalton was a band from Tunis, the capital of Tunisia. They came together as a band around 1968 when most of the members studied together at the University of Tunis. The band had five members. Faouzi Chekili on guitar, piano and vocals, Ridha Kouhen on bass guitar, Mustapha Rehouma and sax and percussion, Sadok Gharbi on trumpet and vocals and Skaner Alim on drums and vocals. They were active in the local scene, playing music that was heavily influenced by American soul and funk and at the same time regional musical traditions. In the early 70s the band got a regular gig at a beach hotel called Sahara Beach Resort on the coastline of Tunisia. They had six month contracts for a couple of years in the early 70s and during that time they would play every single night of the tourist season. While the hotel gig required the band to play sets leaning      towards tourist entertainment, the regular work helped put some money into the band's accounts. Using those funds the band was able to travel to Rome to record their one and only 7“ single release "Alech" around 1971/1972. The band eventually dismantled in the mid 70s and returned briefly as a new group with new members in the late 1970s under the name Carthago but that is a different story……

The single itself impressed us heavily when we first stumbled upon it through French collector Victor Kiswell. While the b-side "Soul Brother“ sounds like a Tunisian version of modern soul / AOR with it’s English lyrics and lush arrangements, the title track "Alech“ is the one that will get every party started. An infectious 3/4 rhythm, a great horn arrangement and brillantly layered vocals that made us think of Brazillian music or the Georgian groove band Gaya. Luckily Faouzi Chekili, the former band leader and composer uses social media communication so he was easy to track down. He is still active as a renowned musician in the Tunisian jazz scene and remains active recording and playing concerts both in Tunisia and internationally.

This deliberate juxtaposition of Burkinabè reality and global musicality sets Art Melody in the lineage of musical geniuses such as Afrika Bambaata, Archie Shepp, The Clash or Manu Dibango, who all blurred lines and embraced diverse influences and genres.

Moogho's powerful statement is in sharp contrast with the stringent and absurdly repressive immigration policies of our times, it stands against cultural segmentation and social segregation. Moogho is a universal dance, a global vibration hailing straight from the streets of Ouagadougou.
