Lychee (@lycheefrut) & I had a lovely time joining May's Nowadays Nonstop with an extended back-to-back, and I'm glad we're able to revisit the moment.

We wanted this set to be as fun as possible while distinctly ourselves, and I love that you can hear a bit of both of us in the recording, dancing side-by-side in one of our favorite venues and building steadily toward a euphoria of our own.

Eric Umble is a Brooklyn-based sound artist, clarinetist, DJ, and event producer. An acclaimed classical musician with a focus on experimental music, Eric's love of repetition and extended forms made his jump to DJing a natural step. 

Eric is co-founder, lead producer, and resident of FACETIME along with Rebecca Goldberg (Detroit Underground). Founded in 2019, FaceTime builds and celebrates community through music, dance, and visual art. It is held monthly in New York City and has also presented after-hours, virtual, and late-night events in both Detroit and Cleveland. Eric is a regular presence in the New York scene appearing at venues including Bossa Nova Civic Club, Trans-Peocs, Mansions, Market Hotel and more. Janus Rose is a producer, synthesist, and DJ hailing from Brooklyn, NY. A veteran of NYC's underground electronic music scenes, she has evolved her sound constantly over more than a decade. Composing hip-shaking club anthems on everything from hardware modular synthesizers to the Nintendo Game Boy, her compositions and DJ style draw heavily from the languages of cyberfeminism, rave culture, and DIY electronic aesthetics.

Notes on the Mix ///
"My friend MacKenzie Wark once described Techno music in a way that made a lot of sense to me. "I feel like it’s alien to any kind of body at all, so I don’t feel especially weird in it,” she told me when I interviewed her recently for an article about queer and trans experiences of raving. This feeling — of being pleasantly disembodied, guided by rhythmic sounds that bear no resemblance to anything in our increasingly terrifying material reality — has become a central focus of my practice as a queer musician.

Over the last few years, we’ve seen an expanding experimental sound palette begin to infiltrate club music. This is thanks in no small part to producers like SOPHIE, whose unrivaled ability to plumb the frequency spectrum for bizarre and unexpected sounds set the stage for a major shift in pop and dance music.

This mix was an attempt to capture some of most exciting examples of this sea change, focusing specifically on the club and the rave as sites of discovery and healing, generating within us what Wark describes as 'euphoric states of welcome strangeness.'"

In addition to his musical output, Young is an accomplished visual artist and designer, who has produced work for Dais Records, Resident Advisor, XLR8R, and among others.

"For my performance at the Basscoast Slowtempo stage in 2023 I explored the theme 'Ancient Rituals'; for thousands of years humans have gathered around fires, banged drums and ascended to higher states of consciousness, with music festivals becoming one modern day interpretation of these ancient rituals.  I chose a selection of ambient/experimental/downtempo sounds specifically to soundtrack anyone who was on a psychedelic journey at the time as they conducted their own ancient rituals. I don't usually release live recordings but this one turned out to be very special despite the live looseness, bonus points if you can hear where I stopped the wrong CDJ."

For the 78th entry in the Honcho Podcast series, we welcome Vancouver's @adamtwo!  Born in Birmingham, England Adam 2 keeps things full of surprises with sets spanning Detroit influenced techno, electro and EBM.
