Your Finest Day

We wanted to give you the finest day. Your news that you'd endured such a journey and were in remission..it gave joy and hope to so many that love you. Your face at that moment,  when you walked from the Consultant's room, eyes wide, shimmering tears down your cheeks,  lip quivering, brain flushed cold, weak-kneed, feet numb, mouthing 'I'm OK'. You collapsed into our arms and shuddered until we all sobbed at the same rhythm,  all howled at the same pitch, holding tighter, never wanting to let go.

And so this is it. Everyone's here, with gifts and cards, ribbons, balloons. We are blessed that you are with us, to see your smile. We take it in turns to fuss you, guide you around the garden to meet everyone. I hope that you didn't notice too much that the conversations were a little lumpy; a little too similar,  too circuitous,  maybe not as natural as they were before.  You know it's because we've talked with one another about you. Whether you'll make it, how brave and uncomplaining you have been. And that pang of embarrassment gets in the way, that's all.

And then I catch you having a quiet moment. You were sat under the tree, dappled with sun, dappled with life, perhaps. Your eyes looked heavy and you stared ahead into the clouds. Maybe you were thinking that your finest day was yet to come, that you should drink in life whenever you could, savouring the taste. Maybe that your finest day had already gone. You catch me with your eyes and give a thin smile. I know..I cannot know your thoughts. Deep black eyes that have seen the abyss; the lifeless, soulless chaos of nothingness. The world turning without you, for a moment, your thoughts and deeds blown high into nowhere.

I walk to you and kiss you..no words. The finest day was our idea. Not yours. Yours was for you to decide.

"A good day", you say kindly, "thank you"

Our fingers hold, then slip apart and then back to the family, throat tight, tears welling.
