After a few intense months at work, I'm finally back. Everyday life had a firm grip on me, and my channel unfortunately had to take a break – but now the radio silence is over. This mix is ​​my musical sign of life and a small apology to everyone who has been patiently waiting in the meantime.

For this comeback mix, I've dug deep into my record bins and compiled a carefully curated selection of forgotten disco rarities for you – with a special focus on South Africa, North America, and, of course, Italy. The tracks embody the spirit of Italo Disco, sometimes subtle, sometimes aggressive, but always with that bittersweet blend of euphoria, nostalgia, and unbridled desire to dance.

"DISCO AL DENTE" stands for music that's perfectly cooked – not too soft, not too hard, but just right to get you moving a little more with every note. Whether on the balcony, in the living room, or with the windows open in the car: This mix is ​​designed to wake you up from your winter slumber and slowly but surely groove into summer.

To celebrate the end of an era, I've dedicated this show to the Ciao Amore Baci party, that Hendrik and I have been running from 2019 to 2024. This special excerpt is from a very early edition in January 2020 when Hendrik and I just played all night, because we did not expect a lot of people short after New Years. I would say this recording represents pretty much what we've been doing with this party, which was not just an "Italo party" but a night open to organic funk and disco sound from the 70s mostly from Italy but also from other parts of the world – up to 80s Italo and synth pop on a rather unknown level. Here are the first two hours.

Music From Mullets #26 w/ Frinda di Lanco & Hendrik Stein - Live from Ciao Amore Baci

Hey friends. Summer is still in full swing (in Germany it’s a bit of a rainy swing so far) and that calls for a fitting Messy Mix. And for the 27th episode I got a true expert on board when it comes to laidback sunny tunes - Christian Beetz from Hamburg, better known in the Soundcloud-verse as @frwctrl (“frequency without control”). He’s been around the scene since the 90s, working as DJ, music blogger and passionate record collector. Right now he’s regularly throwing a “Baleraric Disco Yachtride” boat party in Hamburg and that definitely sounds like an event I should catch whenever I’m in town the next time.

Since Christian’s Soundcloud is loaded with hundreds of delightful mixes for various moods, his involvement in the MESSY MIX series has been a longtime wish of mine. Of course, his hour of selected sounds comes with a summer theme and became a musical tribute to the special lighting conditions on Fuerteventura throughout the day from sunrise to sunset. “I have spent my summer holidays on this island over the last 10 years in a row and I was there for the first time back in the early 80’s,” Christian explains. “The special lighting conditions on the island fascinate me since the first time, so I tried to capture the individual light situations throughout the day in a mix.” 

The result is a selection that starts smooth and relaxing but gains a bit speed throughout its run. Truly a great after hour soundtrack or one for hot summer days. Let me just say, it also works extremely well if you don’t happen to stay onFuerteventura. The set is now up and running on the Messy Mix Soundcloud page. Nicolas Motte, aka Nico Motte, is first and foremost a graphic designer, working at the Check Morris studio in Paris which he founded along with partner Mathias Pol in 2004. For ten years Nico was involved in the art direction of French label Antinote, a label on which he has also produced and released several albums; Three under his own name, Life Goes On If You Are Lucky, Rheologia, and most recently (at time of writing), 2023's The Missing Person. He has also released a record with Raphael Top Secret and Zaltan, a collaboration under the name 18 Rays. In addition to music production and his extensive graphic design work, Nico has also hosted a radio program called Depeche Motte on LYL Radio, and the mix that he has kindly submitted to The Sunrise Mixtapes is from that radio show.

Nico has selected some lovely obscure ambient percussion records by the likes of Giuliano Sorgini and William Loughborough, gradually progressing into wonky left-field digital reggae, including Romie Singh's classic 'Dancing To Forget', Desmond Coke's 'I Need Somebody', from his 1989 LP Let's Chase The Sun, and of course Sexy T.K.O.'s 'Touch Me, Take Me', just to mention a few.
