Sheffield newcomer Atdhe impressed with his soulful Remix of Kamal Imani's 'Cosmic Being' on recent Monologues Records release 'Dialogue Vol. 2'. 'Can I Borrow A Feeling?' is a classy, ​​stripped-back slab of piano-driven deep house that has a surprisingly big impact on the dancefloor, 'Earl St. Groove' is atmospheric and chugging with more warm melody abounding, and 'Niche Dreams' rounds off with a hazy low-slung groover. Label boss Ben Gomori injects 'Earl St Groove' with a galloping tribal rhythm on his remix, honing in on some of those tasty melodies.

Atdhe - Can I Borrow A Feeling? [Monologues Records]

Fouk might have been curating Outplay since 2013, but their ‘Butterfunk EP’ is in fact the duo’s first proper EP on their own imprint. It’s not that they’ve been resting on their laurels: they’ve dripfed a handful of EPs on the likes of Heist and House of Disco over the past few years, and released solo efforts on Kolour Ltd and Razor ’n Tape that stormed the charts. It’s been fascinating to see the Dutch pair slowly break the mould, moving from heavy sampling in favour to an emphasis on original instrumentation and production.
The Butterfunk EP is fine showcase of their prowess in the studio, loaded to the hilt with contemporary dance floor funk. Things kick off with the rolling drums, off-beat percussion and seriously infectious Hammond lines of Organ Freeman. Title track Butterfunk is aimed squarely at the hips with its smooth keys and perfectly placed vocal, while some acid lines give the track a little edge. Flip over for the bumping ‘Wong Way’, a chunky workout with a rubber bassline. The finale of the EP is ‘Winter’, a fantastic slice of 80’s inspired downtempo mushroom jazz.

Compost Records is celebrating 25 years in the game. That’s no easy feat to accomplish with styles, genres and fads changing on a never-ending basis. The fact that they are still relevant, not just relevant, but thriving, all of these years later, is a testament to the quality of the label’s output. 

In order to celebrate another milestone achievement, Compost reached out to an esteemed roster of artists and asked them to contribute a remix of their favorite tune from the label’s back catalog. This is a huge package. A box set of 10 records plus digital exclusives on top of that and it features some fantastic artists both younger and more established.

To help Compost celebrate this achievement we’ve gladly volunteered to premiere one of the remixes from the compilation. Kai Alce’s Full Shuffle Remix of the classic hit “Sidestep” by Rainer Trueby & Corrado Bucci aka Truccy. A shuffling beat and jazzy synth licks introduce the tune alongside the now classic vocal. Deep pads and Kai’s infamous keyboard noodling continue to come into the fold, transforming this tune into a contemporary gem. Kai Alce can seemingly jam on top of anything and this here is no exception.
